Ritzenhein 12.56. Great run. What he's always promised.

WR for Isinbayeva, 5.06m. Didn't think she was in that kind of shape, I guess she was pretty motivated after Berlin.

Not bad by the Irish, Derval was a bit of the pace but she did beat LoLo Jones. The resurgence in US distance running for both Men and Women is amazing.

oh come on. Did you see the race? She beat Lolo Jones, because Jones pulled up injured off the last hurdle! She walked across the line. Only then did Derval pip her.

I would say Gillick's run was very good. O'Rourke's was about average for her. She excels at championships, but can not perform on the circuit.

Agree on the US distance guys/girls. Also Dobrisky was excellent, and Lancashire did very well. SB's from Ohuruogu and Sanders in the 400m, and an excellent run from Jeter in the 100m.

you have to say though, Derval - who cares, she did her work last week. Jeter, Isinbayeva, Dawn Harper etc....all a week too late.

You are glossing over one of the stories of the season. Isinbayeva was shocked last week an looked out of sorts. Her recovery to break the WR tonight is the stuff of legend.......... and its never too late to break a world record!! Absolutely astonishing!!

I put her in an accumulator bet with Paddy Power for Berlin at 1/8 ... she was worst odds, even worse than Bolt for the 100m! I was more shocked than her when she lost!

Its seemingly the 27th time she has broken the world record!

Was there a bonus for breaking it in Zurich?

I believe she got a $50 thousand bonus for breaking it.

    Picture this.
Last week in Berlin, Gilick and O Rourke don't make it past the first round.
This week, Gillick goes out and runs 44.6 or O Rourke a new NR.
Do the Irish public even hear about the second performance?

While Isinbayeva's WR is impressive, it's not nearly as impressive as pulling it out during a major championship.

I don't now who said it or even the exact quote but ...
"Records come and go, but I'll always have my medal"

Great stuff and thanks for posting that.

Been a great couple of weeks for Gilly & Derval. Also great to see both US & UK middle-distance runners getting back near the top. Been a good couple of weeks for athletics generally. We can thank Bolt, the Germans and some of those mentioned above. Let's hope those here that can't see farther than their own little egos and agendas wise up and smell the flowers.
oh, Ian O'Riordan has a nice article in today's IT.

Not only Ritzenhein but Tegenkamps running in Berlin proves you dont have to be african to race at the very top. The americans have amassed strong groups of runners in professional programs albeit with corporate sponsorship designed to get the best out of them in a structured environment. Question, would Martin Fagan have run sub 61 for the half based in Ireland. Phenomenal national record deserving the height of respect. Nothing wrong with training in Ireland, just a query.....
