I rang up the council etc and spoke to someone regarding my situation. I'm a mature student going into third year and been living away from home for over a year now. However, I was told that I am assessed on my living situation one year prior to my starting whatever course I am on. So because I was living at home when I started my course, it dosent matter that I moved out now and I would now be assessed on my parents income, they make over the limit etc and I wouldnt get the grant or if i did it would be not alot. Thats such a bull**** rule. I would have to take a year out, be living away from home working and then reapply for the grant and id get it then, ffs. Stupid the way they dont make allowances for people that change their living arrangments during their courses. Does this seem correct or is there anything i can do.

Isn't there a "Change of Circumstances" form you can fill out? Maybe they'll consider it if you fill this out?

Ya fill out that change of circumstance form. you should be allowed do that. yes it is absolute nonsense. i have been living away from home for several years and because i dont have an ESB bill in my name for october 2008!!!!i may not get the grant as an independant mature applicant!!!!they dont believe that you are living away from home apernetly if you dont get the ESB bill directed to your name even though im in my late twenties!!! thats what they tell me anyway. Total bull****.

Councils are getting pretty strict about the critera for grants, probably over some students in the past exploiting the system, try change of circumstances and have proof of same eg, utilty bills etc

yes, its true and i feel sorry for you. i've been caught with this, despite not living at home for two years when i began my degree. worse luck - you will still be assessed in the same way for a postgrad as i have found out. the one year out of education rule is changed i was told today. from now on you have to be out of education for THREE years before you can be considered as a mature.

    Man thats really tough.

Sorry not to hijack the thread but I'm going to be studying in Wales this year but on the application form I have my home address. Obviously I'm gonna update them on my new address when I move in over there but will total grant be determined by my home address or how far the University is away from home?

    Thanks.
