What was the best rugby anthem that you ever had the pleasure of hearing in person??

mine was the Fields of Athenry and Molly Malone at the croke park during the hc semi between Munster and Leinster in May 2009 although they were a recording they were sung well and the flags added to the atmosphere.

The Anthems at the Ireland vs France six nations game in 2009 were also good anthems

The South African anthem sung at any stadium.

Welsh Anthem in the Millenium and secondly the SF anthem is good when sung at home... Oh and God Save the Queen sung in Croke, warmed the cockles of my heart.

Oh Flower of Scotland, it's about the only thing that has ever made me wish I was Scottish.

Bread of Heaven in the Millenium Stadium in response to the Haka in 2004. I've been there and heard it many times before but this particular one was outstanding, led by a tenor who marched from under the posts at the Wales end right up to the halfway line to confront the ABs with a Welsh Flag held high.

+1. What an anthem, always raises the hairs on the back of the neck. Especially when they are playing England.

Flower of scotland or n'kosi sikelel' iafrica, the 2 of the greatest national songs i have ever heard. Especially flower of scotland when they stop the bag pipes for the second verse in murrayfield leaving just the crowd singing, incredible stuff. Also does anyone else notice that when the south african national anthem is sang in south africa stadiums the majority of the home support dont sing the first 2 stanzas, only coming in when the afrikaans verses start? It was really bad in Newlands where as soon as the afrikaans verses started it was as if the ground all of a sudden came to life. Just a thought

EDIT: not the one i was looking for, but worth the post.

They'd never allow it though. The government would insist that 80 percent of the box be black.

Fair enough. The white box had it all it's own way for far too long.

Down with the opressor of the black box.

The English anthem is great because it's so short. Argentina's the worst. I personally am sick of anthems. For instance if Ireland play (at home) The All Blacks in a friendly we have to sit through a mini Amhrann na Bhfiann, handshakes with a mute lady, two average national anthems, a Phil Coulter song and some tribal dance.

I'd love to see players just run onto the pitch and start the match when they are pumped after their team-talks.

    Italian or French for me

The South African and Italian anthems. They are sung with passion and you can see how it binds the team together.

i just think there's too much going on in an all blacks/ireland game before a ball is even kicked. If i wanted to hear music i'd go to a gig...not Phil ****ing Coulter!

I like the Italian's one but nothing beats Flower of Scotland at Murrayfield, when the music drops out and the crowd sing it alone it's incredible!

Yeah. But this isn't the "Best comeuppance " thread! :D I was just glad the roof was closed that day. It could have become one of the worst tests ever, otherwise!

I think I prefer the Scotish, Welsh, and French anthems to either of our 2.

Although technically not an anthem the jean michel jarre industrial revolution tune that was played before the matches at the last world cup in France was great.

stop your nonsense with the "in this day and age you should have more to worry about than if the abs do the haka or not". If i wanted to bitch about the recession/job losses, i might have gone to a related thread to do just that. But 'I' went to a thread called BEST RUGBY ANTHEM.

"did you ever think of growing up" Why didn't I think of that?

    muppet

You took the words out of my mouth there. Real hair on the back of the neck stuff. I mean even Brian Moore was impressed and said so. The only time I've ever heard him say anything good about Irish rugby.

Ireland's Call in Thomond Park when Ireland played Romania in a pre 2003 world cup warm up.

Ireland's Call is a grotesque affront to anthems. It sickens me, I have to switch over every time I hear that windy Phil Coulter schmaltz hitting my ear drums. Yuch.
