Is there a way to get "hormones pumping" on non-deadlift/squat days?

People talk of doing squats and deadlifts first, since they get hormones racing etc. What about on your other days? e.g. nowadays I am often doing squats or deadlifts only on some days, and upper body on others.

I have done isometric squats before which certainly got me sweating like a lunatic but with no DOMs the next day. I am wondering if this is enough to get hormones going, presumably not to the same degree, but perhaps better than nothing.

My DOMs from squats last a few days, yet I could manage isometric ones quite easily. Or would one of those crossfit type routines frans etc get you pumping?

Also if you are doing nothing on a particular day could you be doing something like the isometric squats to aid repair etc?

I thought it was month misspelled. But its no doubt meant to be the Irish term for girlfriend, I won't even get into the debate on how to spell it!

    juicy ones?

    one would assume growth hormones..

To quote someone "if something is worth doing, do it every day"

why not squat as part of your warm up or do some power cleans, single arm dumbells snatchs etc

i am not too sure about this hormone business but if you want to do some quad dominant/posterior chain work why not do some of the above as a warm up, maybe it'll get said hormones pumping and the more squats/cleans/snatchs you do the better your technique will be in them

I thought the reason deads and squats have this effect is because they target so many muscles and the biggest ones. But surely compound lifts will have some hormonal effect even if its slightly less than that caused by squats, otherwise no one would ever grow if they trained chest or shoulders without squatting on the same day?

    Do you mean anabolic hormones?
    growth hormone?
    igf1?
    insulin?
    testosterone?

    Why are you training?
    strength?
    power?
    size?
    fat loss?

Or are you just training for the purpose of DOMS and hormonal optimization?

I would love to help around here, but people ask baseless questions thus making useful answers rather difficult.

I think the main thing is that the central nervous system gets a good kick out of squats/deads,it has somthing to do with the pressure the spine/back are put under, the body feels a super heavy ass weight being placed on it so it just has to respond, mostly a hike in natural hgh out put for a short time only.

    Go on the MOTS

Well I cannot do heavy squats everyday. But I do wonder about what you say, but I am not sure if warmup squats would do much good.
I thought the reason deads and squats have this effect is because they target so many muscles and the biggest ones.
I am wondering if it is the muscle or the CNS that causes the release. e.g. I cannot phsically do heavy squats due to DOMs, but I can manage the isometric one which leave me in bits sweating etc. So I expect the CNS is working and could be causing a hormomal response. But I wonder if this is a good thing...

otherwise no one would ever grow if they trained chest or shoulders without squatting on the same day?
Yes, but I am wondering if they would grow even better if they did get hormones flowing in some way, like that 20rep squat routine is meant to do.

:o not sure really, I won't pretend to know which are most important, probably all of the above, if thats whats released doing heavy squats/deadlifts.

    In this order.
    fat loss,
    size,
    strength
    power.

I would like to add size to raise my metabolism so I can continue to eat pretty much what I like and therefore keep fat off.

I think you are mistaking hormones with metabolism.
Squats and deads will get your heart racing the way a warm up jog would. It means the rest of your weight session will be part areobic and calorie consuming.

Growth hormones are realeased with all weight work regardless of which body part you work on. gym pals might be encouraging leg work to people who might otherwise ignore it thus increasing that said persons overall growth potential.

If you want your metabolism to race on a rest day then consider drugs such as ECA.

I understand the difference, when I said "I would like to raise my metabolism", I meant that by adding lean mass my basal metabolism would be raised as a long term goal. And the short term hormone release might aid muscle growth and in that way increse the metabolism in the longer term, I am not talking about boosting metabolism by doing the squats (though they might to some degree, in the short term).

Yes, but many would say deadlifts & squats are the best to do it, and that relase would result in better growth all over. So if I can get a similar release I would like get it every time I workout.

Cheers, but I would rather just do it naturally. I am not desperate to do it, just wondering if it would be a worthwhile practise.

Ah yes, I remember reading something about spinal loading before, I do belt squats and do not get the same crazy sweating as I would with even isometric ones. I would be interested in any studies people have on this subject.

I can see it now, some lad going into a supps shop.

I know this is a bit off topic, but at age 18, I still don't feel fully developed, especially facially, I have a real baby face. Could these sorts of hormonal releases achieved from compound lifts cause any facial changes at all?

I'm really curious if this is in any way possible.

No. The only thing they're good for is providing a discussion point on internet boards to scive off work.

I gotta disagree there, its possible these lifts are causing you to grimace a bit. Tightning up your face will pronounce different features a little over time.

You could end up looking 'ded ard', like wise you could end up looking like right said fred.

It's Maith technically, as it comes from maith an cailín. But tis true, doing the horizontal tango increases your testosterone production.

Y'know it's funny, but I've seen some stuff on sexual intercourse and it's effect on test production, but nothing on whether hand shandies deliver the same? That would really be great for most users of this forum who are clearly single.

But yes, test production increases after intercourse, which is why the no sex rule a lot of sportsmen claim to enact is possibly counter-productive.

You're already doing weighted pullups - if you're not doing so already I'd recommend including heavy partials starting from a full hang and going up about 3/4s of the way or less. It is possible to get some serious weight moving in a partial pullup and there is great potential for growth in the lats.

Another break from squats and deadlifts- grip training. Grip training done properly doesn't just hit forearm muscles. When I am doing grip training I squeeze my glutes together so hard that I get cracking noises from the base of my spine :) I often have DOMS in my lats and ass after doing grip work.

Thanks, I will give it a go, I usually am doing heavy negatives, I am trying out higher reps at the minute but will try these at the start of a session. To get the best of both worlds I could try heavy partial rope pullups.
