Red Faction: Demons of the Badlans Quick Review

Demons of the Badlands creates a new location called Mariner Valley. The entire map and DLC is self-contained (i.e. you can't access it from the main map). The story is set 10 years before the events of the main game and you're playing the Marauder version of Samanya.

As my first ever purchase (as opposed to free download) from the PSN I had high hopes for this DLC. While it's reasonably solid I feel a bit let down. There's a few reasons:
    • Technical Issues: It wasn't all that smooth, occasionally stalling for a second every now and then which got frustrating. Something that didn't happen throughout the game proper.
    • Storytelling: There seems to be no real storytelling here. You're given the most basic of overviews of who you are, and what you're aims are but there are gaps. Would it kill THQ to put more effort into elaborating on the story?
    • Innovation: There's a lack of this, everything in the DLC is just clever variations on the main game. New weapons, new vehicles. But no new game ideas. It feels like a repeat of the main game which felt boring.

In terms of good points the formula of the main game is a good one (bar the lack of proper storytelling) so it's built on good foundations. The new weapons and vehicles (especially the Crusher Walker and Gutter) are very cool. The DLC itself is long too, containing lots to do and lots to blow up.

I'd give it 6.5/10. (I'd have given the main game 8.5/10)
