anybody have any experience of applying for a credit card without having a full time job? I have the student master card from AIB and I've never paid a bill late in 4 years, but when I called them to ask for a Visa card they said I would have to be in full time employment and show evidence of 12 months wages running thru my account

I didnt mention poker, but I did ask what would the situation be if I was self employed and he said I would have to show my accounts and have an accountant declare I was paying my taxes properly

Is it really this difficult? Obviously I don't any set amount going thru my accounts every month - although maybe I should, for the future?

MBNA might be worth a shot. As you are in the category of people who will actually pay your bill on time and in full it doesnt matter where you get it or if they have a rep for large fees and charges - a custoemr with your profile wont incurr them.

failing that id contact your local branch manager where you hold your account.

Maybe set up a company and say that you are a poker consultant and coach. Put money into company each month and then withdraw a set amount each month to your bank account. You can say this is your job and pay some taxes and should look better than a poker player. This is probably more in mind if you are ever looking for a mortage down the line or some loan.

I think the only other way fot you to get a credit card is if you can get someone to act as guarantor for you - now that I think of it my parents may still be guarantors on my visa lol.

In the US, most banks offer prepaid Visa cards for just these sort of situations. Example: you deposit €500 in the account, you have a €500 limit. These are a great way to build up a credit history. I googled "prepaid visa ireland" and it looks like it may be available in a few places.

I got an MBNA card with nothing more than proof of address and another credit card statement - the crazy credit days are over but worth a shot.

Word of warning about MBNA - they seem to activate all sorts of extra shít unless you expressly opt out. I got stung for 'payment protection' and some other bits which was a % charge on total spend which adds up very quickly when using for poker. I got a refund on the charges after a bit of a saga but make sure you tell them you want the most basic card available.

What about the neteller debit card?

I use it, and have no trouble. I never intend going over the limits anyway, so the credit part doesnt concern me.

Its possible it wont be issued to some countries though.

You can get a prepaid version in most banks which you can put as much as you want on,well over here anyway but Id imagine Ireland is the same.

MBNA are the easiest to get a card from. You would still need to show them your current account with proof of regular deposits though.

Can you not request an increase in the credit limit on your current Mastercard? Or put a few quid on there to cover whatever purchases you would like to make?

Wasn't there something on another recent thread about Mastercard being a pain when it came to withdrawing?

Yeah I was under the impression that Mastercard don't like you making withdrawals. I've done several on my Visa with no issues.

Halifax will give you a VISA debit card when you open a current account wuth them. It's like laser except it's run by visa so it works anywhere. I got one just by telling them I played poker, they dont need proff of income since it's only a debit card.

I got a new credit card in mid-2008 when I didn't have a job. I put down "self-employed" on the application. I had savings with the bank at the time and I did have income, though it was being paid into an account with another bank.

I also had a student credit card at the same time, though I was no longer a student.

Yeah got one myself there a while back. Really handy to have and would recommend Halifax too. CS is top knotch and being open on a saturday is super handy. Great to use for ebay also through paypal, no fiddling about with 3v cards or the like.

Does the Visa Debit Card facilitate withdrawals from poker sites?

Couldn't tell you that tbh. My hunch is yes. Email/call Halifax/PPP support themselves for the answer.

Yes afaik. I've used it for that once.

Surely you can just say you're self employed and send in a copy of a recent bank statement (assuming you have an active account, paying bills etc).

crazy how things have changed. When I was a 2nd year philosophy student with no income whatsoever and an already maxed out visa card AIB gave me a mastercard with a €6k limit over the phone. I'd asked for one with a 2k limit

Yes, you have to send proof of address and ID, you can fund your account by withdrawal after you make a nominal deposit, but you wont be able to withdraw from Full Tilt to MB until you deposit something the other way

    Thanks Oscar

Is there any difference between me holding a Visa Debit card and a Visa credit card, apart from the fact I have to have the Debit card pre loaded?
