What are your opinions on the Zoom H4, it looks really good as a portable multitrack recorder. I think I might get it! I checked out an olympus ls 10, tascam dr 7 and a yamaha pocketrak. The Zoom seems to beat them, all i need it for is for messing around with rough song ideas and demos and possibly some live recording

I like it a lot. Produces decent live recordings. Never really used the multi track much though.

The inbuilt mics are great, much better than I was expecting for the price. I use mine for recording rehearsals and it picks up everything.

Two words for you: Just buy it.
You gotta buy it to believe it.

Now I'm not a pro or anything, but when I started playing with it I was like a kid with a bb gun. Well you know what I mean.:D

You won't believe the sound quality on a live recording. Like eoin5 said, the only down side is, you'd better be good, because it's like looking at yourself naked: you may not like what you find out !!!

I have one, it's fairly handy alright. There's a new version out called the H-4n that I heard is better.

    Ha ha!!!

Cheers, I think I'll get it. I was asked to pick out my christmas present already so I saw this and liked it. I mean I record music ideas I come up with on my phone at the minute, I think its time to upgrade to something decent!!

I checked out the zoom H4n, nice but its a bit too pricey though

Waltons had them for €240 today.

There's a really good vid on the interweb comparing the H4 with other rival units from Marantz, Tascam, etc. The guy basically tries all the units in various field situations and he shows graphs of all the dynamic responses. The H4 didn't come out too well against the Marantz AFAIR.

I'll dig it up on my bookmarks somewhere...
