Oil Cooler

I'm about to put an engine into my MK2 Golf GTI that's pretty much tuned to the last to squeeze every horse possible out of it.

I'm thinking of fitting one of these (shown one is for a VR6, there is one that's more or less the same for the GTI)

I'll get the one with the thermostat so the oil isn't too cold in normal driving conditions.

With this in place though I think if I do a bit of spirited driving it should prolong the life of my engine and keep her performing 100%

Any opinions or reasons not to do this?

Make sure you go bigger than you need and be sure it has a thermostatic sandwich plate or you will just cause your engine to take too long to warm up...... (bad for a road car)

Id look at an owners club and see what others have done. Like oil filter re-location etc.

Also make sure your oil pump is good (if your fitting this kind of thing its an ideal time for oil pressure/temp gauges)

Oil pump is spot on. The engine was rebuilt using all uprated parts about 15k miles ago.

Go bigger than I need? Would that not take even longer to heat up?

The GTI has an oil temp gauge, might look into a pressure gauge

With a thermostatic sandwich plate it wont matter if it takes longer to heat up as the cooler will be closed until needed

    Ah cool.

On the job itself, is it really worth installing? Will it really help protect my engine or am I just inviting more trouble?

cooling is always a good thing on an uprated engine!

That's my thinking, just don't know if they have any major negative side effects.

Need to figure where to mount it now :)

Mine is the older small bumper version. I'll have a look when I buy the cooler and see where I can fit it and where it'll get a good flow of air
