hi all, ive always been slightly obsessed with the fuel consumption of my cars but my current drive takes the biscuit....

im driving a '03 Mini Cooper (1.6), full tank of petrol is €50 - absolute max i can get out of it is 300 miles - no more, and actually its empty now and only 286 on the clock!

i think this is rather poor....i dont drive it hard, dont use the air con too much - do do shortish journeys but always have and never got that little for €50.....

    any thoughts??

That works out at 31mpg which,to be honest sounds about right in a mini cooper used for mainly short trips. Sorry to be that pessimistic but i dont think you could really hope for much better out of it!

Sounds about right for a 03 model. I used to get 34 from mine. You should look at a remap though, the car will go up to 135Bhp (Very reliablly, as the engine will go to 150Bhp with mods), but the fuel economy will also drastically improve. I used to get somewhere around 38 after a remap, mainly because as the car was much more powerful, I didn't have to drive it so hard to get the same performance out of it.

im going to be a total girl and ask what a remap is and how id go about it?

A remap is when someone connects a laptop to the car, and overwrites the car's programming for power with a new 'map' that allows the car to develop more power. Typically manufacturers choke the output of their cars so they can pass noise/emmissions tests, but the engines are a capable of a lot more. The 03 MINI engine is made in 3 horsepower outputs, 90, 115 and 163. The 90 and 115 horsepower were sold in the MINI One and the MINI Cooper, but they were the same engine apart from the software inside. So if you remap both of those engines, they both go to the same 135 Bhp, and can manage to do so reliably.

Do a search for remap on google, and you should find plenty of people, especially if you're in Dublin.

So you're saying that a Cooper is more fuel efficient than a Mini One? Is that the same for a Diesel and Cooper Diesel? The Cooper would be more efficient ? Interesting.
