    Hi,

here is my situation, I have been working for company ABC for 3.5 years. Until May 08 I worked in the operations department. In may 08 I moved to the Training department to cover a maternity leave contract. However I never signed a new contract. The maternity leave was due to end in June 09. The position which I was covering was at a grade higher than my own. In June the person returned from maternity leave for a week and then left the company. I was told I would be kept on. This was great as I prefer the training job.

I then asked if I would be raised a grade into the position that was made vacant by the person who left. There was also another position at the same grade which the person left and i picked up the work for aswell so i thought it fair that I now get one of these positions which had been vacated. All my appraisals have been good and there has never been a complaint about my work.

Anyway 4 weeks of hearing nothing about my request and I was called into an office and told that from a business point of view they are not promoting anyone (in my eyes its not a promotion) I was told the 2 more senior positions have been made redundant. They also said from a personal point of view I have not got a good case. As i said never any complaint about my work at all, also I have written and delivered far more courses in the same period than the person I was covering for plus I have taken all all the other persons work. They then went on to tell me how the market is really bad and no other companies in my industry are hiring , which I though was a strange thing to say.

I waas told I need to shine and that I need to raise my profile in the ops department that i train to. Now this is difficult as my manager gets all the queries from them and I get the feeling she doesn't want to give me any extra responsibility. I would know more about the system we train so quite often i do the prep but she will take over the presentation and therefore get the credit. Also her and her manager my senior manager are friends outside work and have a very flirtatious relationship. there is nothing going on but he won't do anything to offend her. She definietely gets special treatment.

Is there anything I can do about this to get the position I was covering?? Also should I push for a new contract showing that I now work in training?
