Pretty much the same as the other thread... what's your budget and what sort of music does your child like?

As far as lessons or book goes, I'd suggest lessons. Much better to start off with lessons, otherwise they'll have to unlearn all their bad habits down the line.... like me. :o

lessons. personally i would find it very hard to learn from a book, once he/she gets afew lessons they will learn pretty quickly, provided they practice of course

you can pick up good guitars for very cheap at the moment, try adverts.ie and put an ad under the wanted section. www.Thoman.de is also great for cheap deals for beginners guitars When you get a decent enough guitar (bring someone who knows something about them), get them to lower the action a bit... this means bringing the strings closer to the fretboard, it makes it easier for a beginner... less sore on the fingers

Here is a useful link http://guitar.about.com/od/commonbeginnerquestions/a/to_buy_guitar.htm

As for beginners music books, The Beatles is where I started, then Simon and Garfunkel. This is where you'll pick up extra chords and finger-styles...
