BTEA Query

Hi. I am hoping somebody might be able to answer a couple of questions re applying for the "Back to Education Allowance".

I have been re-training for the past 2 years as a PC/Laptop Repair Technician and Junior Network administrator on a 2 year CE Scheme which finishes up 2 weeks before i am due to start a full time CCNA Networking course due to start mid september.

I have paid for the course in full and was wondering if i am entitled to claim the BTEA allowance or will i be forced to drop the course. I was told by the Citizens Info Office 3 months ago that a CE SCHEME counts toward my eligibility for claiming the BTEA allowance but i am still slightly worried that i won't get it and therefore won't be able to start the course.

    Any info much appreciated, Thanks.

Citizens Info are correct about the CE scheme counting towards eligibility, however, you also need to check if the course is covered by the scheme. Only those covered by the Maintenance Grant Scheme are covered by the BTEA. See studentfinance.ie for details.

Hi Jano1. Thanks for the info.

I am entitled to the Maintenance grant. I have checked the criteria and i definitely qualify. So, i am ok then?

You need to check the other BTEA criteria regarding previous courses, how long you are out of full time education depending on you age etc.

I am out of fulltime education 3 years and have worked on a CE Scheme for the previous 2 years re training in I.T and getting the relevant hands on experience but not having any luck finding a full-job decided in early march to get my CCNA certification while the economy is in the doldrums.

Will the fact that i was in full time education 3 years ago (for 1 year), affect me when it comes to getting the BTEA allowance. I am a mature student. Thanks again for your help.
