The Tucker was the first car to have seat belts as standard, which is why it was unsuccessful. It had an unsafe image because of that.

It was also the first car to have a swiveling headlight (one in the middle), so the Citroën DS was NOT the first to have this :D

I remember watching the movie years ago, i must pick it up again.
I didnt realise the engine was a modified helicopter unit though... flat 6.
I'm not sure the nose light does anything for it, but otherwise i think its a super design, and very of its time - must have been a knockout car to see in the late 40s

presten tucker failed with his company because his car was so far ahead of it's time, It was widely considered by the bag three that if this car was to make it into production it was going to cost millions to try to retro fit existing models or develop new models. This resulted was sustaned slander campaigns against the tucker corporation and also strings were being pulled in the senate to have presten indited for fraud he was cleared of any wrong doing at trial but unfortunatly the damage was already done and tucker was no more. here is a link to a supposed one off tucker convertable prototype make up you'r own mind if it's genuine or not.

That convertible was only found recently, but no one is sure if it was made the same time as the original 50 or whether it is a recent conversion. There is a company in the States that is building Tucker replicas on Caprice running gear.

I watched the Tucker movie again last night. It was such a shame he got screwed by the Big Three and the politicans.

Well worth a watch for any car enthusiast.

I saw one in the flesh last summer in the San Diego Automotive Museum. They are a facinating car and the guy really was a pioneer.
