    hey all,
i have a thread up here a few months back about ps3 trouble,it froze in a game and never played games again!!,i finally have a bit of money to get it fixed,i am assuming its the blu-ray of death, but it wont play ps2 games either,(it is a 60gb model)

    so will a 60gb with a broken blu-ray still play ps2 games???,
im worried now it could be something more serious,it starts up as normal but if i put a ps3 or ps2 game in it does nothing,i might bring it somewhere today or tomorrow to get fixed,

its miles out of warranty now by the way,

From what I have read it should still read PS1/2 games. But I'm 99% sure if it's just the blu ray laser head then it should still read DVD. Theres also the possibility that the drive mechanism might bu knackered so it may not play any disks. If you'r so enclined you could try and buy a replacment drive from ebay and install it. I've got links that show you how to replace it. If you want them just PM and I'll send them on

oh crap i assumed it was just the blu-ray gone which would be an easy fix for a console repair place(i think),i wouldnt be confident enough to fix it myself,it could be a serious problem so if it wont read ps3 or ps2?

I dont think it is out of warranty consoles have a 3 year warranty in Ireland, you may have to fight them and get on to the consumer board from all the trouble xbox had this kept coming up.

I think the actualy law is a item must work for a reasonable time , Since sony say the PS3 should last 10 before being outdated you should reasonably expect it to last at least 3 years.

yeah i have heard of people fighting them but this is over two years old now so i dont think its worth it,plus i dont want a refurb incase they dont give me a 60gb,

TBH console repairs should be able to do this at worse it's likely it's a new BLU RAY drive mechanism and at least it'll be a new laser head. They should be able to sort out either. Have had a look at a fair bit of online procedures and I'd be comfortable enough changing my own if it came to it so they really should have no issues.

consoles have a 3 year warranty in Ireland.
ALL Electrical goods have a legal warranty of UP To 6 years. Yes, it's based on a "reasonable time". Sony will say a reasonable time for PS3 breakage is 1 year, obviously. However, only a court of law can actually tell what a reasonable time is. It WILL be more than one year, probably more than 2 years too.

You are WELL within your rights to fight Sony on this. Be nice. tell them that you want it fixed. To be honest, you should have started this as soon as it broke. It shouldn't cost you anything [MAYBE courier costs back to Sony].

If they refuse, you may bring them to Small Claims Court. If they refuse, tell them this. Costs something like €15.
