I'm heading to france on the ferry next thursday, bring the car and plan on doing alot of driving.

I just checked my driving licence and the flipping thing is expired. I feel like a complete muppet.

I am based in North Kildare and planning being at the motor office in Naas county council for 9am tomorrow morning.

Do you recon they will give me a new licence there and then? I have proof of my ferry booking just to try and convince them. I also have a load of recent utility bills to prove my address.

Has anybody had a similar problem and got it sorted?

    Thanks.

I'd say you'll be alright. Driving on an expired licence in a very minor offence and it can be expired for up to 10 years before one has to resit the test/tests.

Even insurance companies ask if you 'hold or have ever held' a licence in the relevant category.

Thats all well and good for Ireland and England.......but in France.....it may well be a different story.

O/P get the licence sorted straight away. If they do not wish to issue over the counter, explain the situation to them.

I had my renewed license out in 4 days after going into the tax office (Dublin) to renew it.

There's also a collection service, which should be quicker.

    Ask them at the counter.

I had to get a new licence last Fri and I'm going away this Fri. When I dropped my licence in I asked about getting it quicker and they said to call in on Mon, next working day, with proof of flight and reciept. Got my licence yesterday morning.

In saying that my Sister just renewed hers and got it in the post the next day. Both where done in Nutgrove.

I renewed my license last month in Limerick Co Co and got the new license over the counter there and then. All I needed was my old license, the application form (D.401), two passport photos and the fee.

Same here, got it same day in Galway. Bring in the ferry tickets as I brought in flight tickets and was asked for them. Shouldn't be a problem to get it same day.

Kildare CC usually process and post licences the same evening from experience. You MIGHT be able to wheedle the counter staff to let you come collect it the next day rather than trust An Post?

    Thanks for the responses.

    Got it sorted.

In Kildare if you bring in proof of travel arrangements they fast track your licence and you can collect it next day.

I saw them doing one over the counter for a guy once because he was going away.
    You should be alright.
