leave out most of the day to visit st peters/the vatican, queues to get into the vatican during the summer can get insane, the queue winds itself around the block

best to visit the colosseum first thing in the morning when it opens, the later you go the longer the queues

as far as irish bars go, they are scattered around the city centre, have to say bars is one area that really disappointed me in rome, expect a tiny bar selling overpriced pints

I would def save a day for the vatican , what you should do is buy skip the line tickets for the vatican museum we got ours on www.viator.com , once you get to the sistine chapel its in the museum , there is a door on the bottom right hand corner looking down from the alter this leads to st peter so you dont hav to que again. This ticket will save you hours seriously!!! You will need to get the metro or bus out to the vatican but alot of the other sites are within walking distance. You will end up walking heaps so bring comfy shoes. We also did the audience with the pope that great too if your there on a wednesday. Rome is fab enjoy. Have a decent map of rome with you so you wont get lost:D

As rossie1977 mentioned... plenty of Irish bars. You will have no problem getting somewhere to see the match. Go to the top of St Peters dome. Great view, and well worth the hike. If you go to the Vatican early in the morning approx 8 or so the queue isnt too bad and you get inside in about 30-45 mins. But be sure and go early. The queues are ridiculous otherwise. You will spend a full day there if you are interested in it.

There is so much to see in Rome. I spend a week there 2 summers ago with the gf. Its a fabulous city for its history. As with every city it has its element of pickpoketeers so just be a big careful and have your wits about you.

Try and get to see the Roman Forum as well. AFAIK it was free entry.

Enjoy the trip. I would love to return some day! :)

    Hi SevenSeas,

Here is a great restaurant recommendation. It's called Alla Rampa and is just alongside the Spanish Steps in Piazza di Spagna. I've been a few times, the food is great, not expensive and they have a great buffet of appetizers. Share a large plate as a starter!

    Take a look here

    Enjoy Rome.

Consider getting the Roma Pass http://www.romapass.it/ - it includes entrance to two sites (except Vatican) e.g. Colosseum/Forum and the borghese gallery, and then discounts for any sites after that (pass lasts 3 days) and the bus tour. You also get a 3 day transport card for buses, metro and local trains. Can work out well if you use it for the two most expensive places you visit and use the metro a lot.

A single ticket gets you into the Colosseum and the forum so if you don't get a Roma Pass, get your ticket at the entrance to the forum if the ticket queues at the Colosseum are long. (though there's a security queue at the colosseum too i think, which you can't skip)

If you go the the catacombs, make sure you know the opening times, they close for an hour or two during the afternoon.

If you're fairly interested in ancient Rome, there is a great place called Ostia Antica near Rome (~45mins on a train, €1 or use Roma transport Pass, train stops just a few minutes walk away). It's a well preserved city similar to Pompeii except it was buried by mud over time and not a volcano eruption. Cost ~€4 when i was there think.

As enzo said, bring comfortable shoes, you'll need them! (though we used buses for the getting to the Vatican, the catacombs and a few other places and found them frequent enough).

There's a great bar in the Trastevere area called Baccanale, fab cocktails :)

Have a great time, Rome is amazing :)
