    Qualifies for classic road tax

Is it me or is the asking price insane?

One zero too many on that price methinks.
Clueless about the road tax element, also.

There's a gold one around the corner from me in regular use.

It doesn't actually qualify for classic road tax either. 3grand for that car is nuts.

My father had one of the last of those first generation CarinaII's, it was a hatch and badges as an 'executive', basically it had all electrics, comfy seats and central locking. Was a lovely car and could pull well for a 1.6. When he got ris it had over 200k on the clock and he drove it to the scrapyard, one of the coolant hoses perished, it overheated and blew the head.

Dad had one bought new and kept until a scrappage scheme came up. He was sad to see it go. Someone near me has a green one, hatchback version, original reg and all. A car that can be relied on.

if age appropriate, probably good. no modern one though, but something oldschool would suit it, if you could get something like these but in a reasonable offset it could be nice

i must ad that the price is horrific though. with some searchin these can still be ogt in reasonable to good condition for well below 1k, there was one on donedeal.ie a few months back that looked damn good as was about 6 or 7 hundred

I quite like the wheels that are on it. Uniquely Toyota!

Out of interest, how many of the original posters have actually driven this model of Carina II?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,801 ✭✭✭✭Gary ITR

I drove 2 of them. Found them quite nice to drive. Boring, but comfortable

I only drove one, for a week. It was appalling.

Cramped, hyper-velour interior with the shiniest plastics ever. How a company managed to mix comedy roll with such a poor ride is beyond me - the 2 year old car crashed and banged over every imperfection. The asthmatic engine sounded like a punishment beating. Comfortable? I think not.

This car was a contemporary of the E30 BMW, the Citroen BX, Peugeot 405, even the Austin Montego. All of which completely out pointed it in every field bar one - reliability. The Carina was no doubt a reliable car. Robust, easily serviced and able to sustain miles and miles of neglect. Of course the 405 didn't have to sustain miles and miles of neglect because their owners LOVED their super-star looks, fluid and supple ride, poised handling and spacious well equipped interior.

Reliability has a price - having to live in a dralon and leatherette nightmare that is the Carina II.

they are a boring run of the mill car but they do it very well. A good car that would go on forever I guess, but I dont want one. Have seen them a few times at shows however so someone must love them.
