We need more details than it just stopped playing games.
What are that exact symptoms that caused you to replace the HDD and then the PS3 laser.

Initially game(fifa09) was dragging then I had to do a update then after that it would not play Fifa atall, same with any other games. It'll play DVDs but it wont take games. At one stage there was a corrupt file and from that SCREE told me I needed a new HDD, also sometimes the blue screen would come up however that has only happened twice, I am now informed that it maybe the motherboard.....? Im totally bemused by it

Can you get a cheap [or borrow] Bluray movie and see if that play?
Sounds like your BR laser is gone. This happens on some older PS3's I believe.

    1. Inform Sony of the issue.
    2. Inform Sony of the steps you have taken, recommended by them, to no avail.
    3. Inform them that you want a repair or replacement [you will lose all saves etc so back them up]
    4. If still no joy... Well, it's too early for that. Come back to us if you are still unhappy.

You are FULLY within your rights to get this resolved. It's more then likely a design flaw with your PS3 [based on your scant info at the moment].

    How old is your unit?
    Is it 60GB, 40GB or 20GB?

Hi - sorry for hi-jacking this thread, but it looks like a similar issue so rather than open a new one.
    I have a 40GB PS3 purchased in Tesco in Apr 08.
The Bluray has stopped working (does not load games, movies or Cd's), I have done the normal rebooting, reformatting, etc.
Called Tesco, they said I need to go to Sony, Sony want €160 for a refurb.

Question - what is the best option?
    • Refurb with Sony @ €160?
    • Console repairs @ €100?
    • Buy a new better spec'd or Lite for €299 and use the 40GB as a media player?
    • Any trade up options available?
    • Other?
Thanks in advance for your advice folks.

Oh dear. This comes up time and time again. I'm almost getting bored typing out the same advice every day.

    1. Your contract is with Tesco. Tesco MUST deal with you, by law.
    2. Your statutory warranty is up to 6 years.
    3. You MAY be quicker to pay to get the item repaired or go back to the manufacturer. But you can do it for free by going through Tesco [place of purchase]
    4. Tesco MUST provide repair, replacement or refund.
    5. A repair must be permanent.

Thanks for the quick response RangeR, do you have any examples of anyone being successful in going down this route? I was on to Tesco for about a month going backwards and forwards, quoting Consumer Rights Acts, etc - but ended up getting nowhere.

I don't but there are many on here if you search. Not just PS3 specific.

Ok, you have done enough via Tescos. This is what you have to do now.

    1. Write up a formal letter of complaint. Detail everything so far and all the failed attempts at getting Tesco to resolve the issue.
    2. Give them 10 business days to respond.
    3. If after this time, they have not responded, initiate legal proceedings via Small Claims Court. Will only cost you €15.
    4. More than likely get your unit repaired / replaced before SCC starts.

Note: Any repair should be permanent. If not, I THINK they must refund or replace. However, I'm not 100% sure on this. I'm sure someone else may chip in soon.

Edit to point 1 : Send the formal letter of complaint via registered post so you will KNOW when it gets there and who signed for it.
Also, DO NOT EMail them. EMails are too easily ignored, regardless of who says what.
