Ok, here is my review of the event.

The actual fights were very good. The standard of fighters was exceptional (in all belt categories).

The atmosphere around the fights was great.

The refereeing and judging was very well done. Those guys did a great job.

There were some things I think need to be addressed.

Firstly, the venue. Andy has already stated that a larger/different venue would be required for next time and i am glad to hear it. This venue was really responsible for most of the negative points i have (although I am sure it is a great gym).

There was no toilet (well one but it was broken and had a turd floating around in it all day). Even if it had been working it was not enough for the huge number of people present (about 250 i would guess). Given everyone had to pre-register the numbers that were to attend must have been known. I would have liked to have seen this addressed. Just a couple of portaloos outside could have resolved this.

There was only one very small changing room. When hosting a mixed event I think it is a requirement to have a separate changing room for the girls (and preferably a separate toilet also). This could be addressed by just hanging a couple of sheets in one corner to make a small changing room.

I didnt think there were any showers. Someone later told me they thought there was one in the changing area but since this was being used by men and women a shower wasnt really an option anyway and 200 people cant use one shower. If you are trying to get people from all over the country to an event they need to be able to shower.

It wasn't possible to watch the fights because there wasn't room for everyone around the matted area.

Despite the assertion that if you didnt make weight you would be disqualified I never saw anybody weigh-in (including me).

The order of fights was not known so the fighters never knew when to start warming up. I was up quite early and didn't know until my name was called so didn't get to warm up at all. Given the pre-registration I would have liked to have seen the fight list pinned up somewhere on a wall so people knew when they were on like they do at the MMA league.I understand that this can only be done for the first round of each division due to the knockout system in effect.

One of the guys from my team registered but was missed from his division so had to have a single fight against some random guy instead of actually fighting in his division. If the fight list was posted on the wall this could not have happened as he would have pointed it out.

Overall i enjoyed the event. The fights were great and the refereeing/judging was also.

If you are reading this and thinking that it is a pretty negative review (and i should shut the hell up!) it really isn't. The important stuff was done well (refereeing and judging) but I think it is important to mention the areas where changes are needed so that the next event is even better.

The water went in the whole area so that could not be helped in fairness, it was a bummer but was out of the clubs hands.

i thought the event went well outside this..and lessons will be learned and improved on, feedback is important to help this.

points taken we had 105 people in the gym competing.
we have run events before and there was no problem.

we had 2 changing rooms ,the ofice was used for the ladies.
the guy that missed his fight (one guy out of 105)was called many times and did not turn upwe gave him another chance with a guy out of hi catagory.

in futher the dublin open will be held in a larger venue and we will have more staff for this.

we let guys cheak there weight at the srart and let guys change weight and some guys were entering in 2 different weights.

the weigh ins were meant to happened at each mat but did not happen,as the 2 guys at each mat were over run with things happening.sorry for this.

we tryed to cover most things
we gave out 5 gis to different fighters, had tea and coffe and some sambos there for guys to use.

we have made contact with the guys that run the kent open which has big numbers,(900 last year ithink) they are going to help us out for the next one
(help the refs and the running of the event)

bjj has really growen in the last few years.
thanks again for all that turned up and hope to see you all again.

thanks for the feed back the next one should be good.

i gotta agree with what was posted above, but would like to say that we need more comps in ireland and fair play for putting it on, its obviously a lot of hassle and takes a lot of time to organise, when you compete in the uk the level is very high and regularly competing is the best way to develop, the more comps here the better no matter what the facilities

is it worth doing a rules meeting before the comp starts as well, i saw 2 DQ's where fighters genuienly thought what they were doing was ok,

fighters need to be aware of the rules themselves first and foremost, and maybe its more for first timers, but people have different interpretations of whats ok and whats not and if thats clear beforehand people cant argue

again thanks and looking forward to the next one, i heard that there might be a munster open this side of christmas as well......

Standard rules are used. People should know this:

    MATA LEO WITH FOOT

    SLAM FROM THE GUARD

    LEG LOCKS

    CERVICAL(only without chokes)

    BICEPS LOCK

    CALF LOCK

    SCISSORS TAKEDOWN

    HEEL HOOK

It was a good day, alot of really talented fighters and it was great to see other ladies there. I was not aware that there was an area for girls to change! I had to strip off behind the ring! lol

It was a wee bit disorganised as the earlier posted said I think, but you can only learn from it. The main problem was the toilet....man i had to hover over it, haha

Anyways a good day and a great turnout. Well done to everyone!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 165 ✭✭bella1

thanks once again, the rules should be coverd by your club the first couple of bjj events we ran rules meetings as 99% of guys were white belts.
when you go to the uk they dont do a rules meeting.
the teams who were there were around the bjj scene a long time.
any way we can only get better for the next one.
    cheers

    Are the results available anywhere?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭Pingu

I thought it was ran quite well, fair enough the venue was a little crowded - most events i've been to (judo) halls are always packed out - it's something you deal with, and the water wasn't their fault.

That aside the matches were ran quite seemlessly and the refs were spot on stopping fights before ppl got hurt.

The biggest problems were caused by the competitors from what I could see. Walking across the mats in the middle of fights and sitting too far onto the mats. That's really not the organisers fault, Refs did there best to get the guys off the mats but some ppl just wont listen.

All in all I thought it was a great event, my first BJJ event, got completly out muscled and out classed, but will definately be back. Cheers to Andy & the guys for running it!

I thought the main problem was no notice before your fight, went onto the mat completely cold no warmup.

Other than that i thought it went well given the amount of competitors.

I really enjoyed the day, (well done to our Team Balance guys who were all competing for the first time)

One thing that hasn't been mentioned was the ridiculous sleeve length of one guys jackets, they just about covered his elbows, how did the cheeky feicer get away with it?

Here's looking forward to bigger and better next time :)

What division was this in? The only person i seen with short sleevs was a girl who had rolled them up, the ref helped her roll them down for the match though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,001 ✭✭✭MaeveD

Not sure of his weight, maybe middle heavy white belt, camo pants and a white jacket, he fought 3 or 4 times.

Tim, if you say it's ok great...... I'm going out to buy a big scissors :D

Standard rules are used. People should know this:

Gotta say, as a regular jj trainer, but not in competitions for a few years, I am major surpised that leg locks are not allowed. Am I missing something here ? In the last comp I was in leg locks were legal, but it is a few years ago.

Are calf crushers and the achilles foot lock not allowed?

I always go for them, can someone clarify

    Thanks

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 46 Campbell M

It is about having a standard set of rules.

The IBJJF dont allow it for Blue or Purple belts so they are not allowed here either.

It really is better to use a standard rule set as every competition is the same then.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 241 ✭✭Pingu

Straight Achilles locks were allowed, no other leg locks though.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,448 ✭✭✭Roper

Just re: criticisms of the venue.

Firstly Ryano have a great gym that lots of people would kill to have, and it is ideal for small tournaments.

The trouble is that when you take a punt and decide to organise something, you literally don't know how many people will show up. If you do take a stab at it and get a hall and move mats etc. to there, you could end up getting only a handful of competitors and leave yourself out of pocket. People are quite fickle and it only takes one football match to keep half of your competitors at home.

I think things are changing a bit and people seem more willing to compete now though.

    are you sure?

List of illegal techniques from http://www.ibjjf.org/rules.htm
FROM ADULT THROUGH SENIOR (BLUE & PURPLE BELT)
    MATA LEO WITH FOOT
    SLAM FROM THE GUARD

In response to Roper i totally understand. Maybe the solution is to have people pay as well as register prior to the event so you know the numbers for sure and can get a venue without risk of being out of pocket. That is certainly how Judo and other sports work. I would be happy enough to do that.
