    Hi all,

I've been doing a lot of running over the last 2 years, but mainly on my own. In the past I've been very lazy about joining an Athletics club but after the performances of our athletes this week I've been inspired to join a club. DSD AC seems like the most ideal as the training is in Marlay Park, which is close to where I live and is on Saturdays and Sundays which is ideal. I just have a few questions:

    1) What type of level do you need to be to join? I'm obviously not of a high level, but I aint slow either (5k: 21.46, 10k: 46:59, Half Marathon: 1.49.06)

    2) What sort of age group would I be running with? I would be hoping that I would be able to run with people around my age (mid 20's). I noticed on the web site that the training at weekends is for 12+ to Adults. Does this mean I would be running with a bunch of kids?????

    3) Whats the social scene in the club like? It would be cool to meet people with the same sporting interests that I have.

    4) How much is the annual fee? And would I have to pay the full annual fee despite the fact theres only 4 months of the calender year remaining?

    5) Is there many competitions for people like myself, who arent exactly elite athletes?

I'm not sure if DSD are the best bet for someone like yourself. Depends where you are based but Crusaders in Ringsend/Sandymount could be a better bet. They have more of a non-elite runner culture going (as well as elite). RoyMcC is a Cru' man so maybe PM him.

I emailed a number of Dublin clubs earlier this year to inquire about joining. I got welcoming replies from Crusaders and Rathfarnham (who also train near Marlay). I can't tell you much about the social scene / range of abilities at either club nowadays.

You could also turn up at a few road races / BHAA events and chat to people there to get an impression.

The problem is that I work until 5.30 every day (unlike most people who finish at 5pm). That extra half hour messes everything up, as there is no way I can get from town to Rathfarnham by bus for 6.30. Its too much of a rush and I'd more often than not miss the training sessions. Thats why DSD looked very handy as the training is mainly at weekends. However if its just a bunch of 30 minute 10k'ers than I'm not particularly interested in that either...

    Any DSD'ers on this forum??

I feel your pain, I don't get to exit work till 7pm.. could get out at 6pm one or two days a week, but it wouldn't make much headway into getting to any club sessions (Ive been looking for a tri club/running club/swimming session to join up to).

I'm in DSD - pm me and I'll give you the number for the head coach Eddie. He's a great guy and I'm sure he'll be able to let you know if the club/age group/training-times would suit you.

If you live close to Marley then you'll be glad to hear that they're more Ballinteer than Dundrum so I'm sure you'll get to know loads of people in your area too.
