thats a totally open ended question. Firstly, state languages that you want. Secondly do a quick google of free to air and your chosen language and you will soon get a list of everything. Most people here would say you'd go for Astra 1 at 19.2E; Astra 2 at 28E and Hotbird at 13E, they're the easiest with normal size dishes. After that you need to start increading dish size. Do a search.
Also a receiver will receive, the only better one is if you want English channels then maybe a freesat received as it has a program guide with it

If you just want the freesat/FTA UK channels, then the Main Satellite Forum has all the answers. That's 28.2E

    http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html

All the satellites you can get, and some you can't are here
    http://www.lyngsat.com/europe.html
    And
    http://www.lyngsat.com/atlantic.html

Click on the Amount of Degrees in the first column (where the dish points using lyngsat tracker or free download from www.smw.se ).

Check the Beam column. For example on 42E, two beams can be received and two can't. On the much closer (ideal elevation) 4W, you probably can't receive anything in Ireland because it "points" at Central Europe and Middle East.
