Its a heap of junk to be honest, i'd rather buy something like a second hand msi wind or advent 4211 than that one.

I'm looking into buying a netbook but dont want to spend too much, does anyone know if this one is any good?

    Thanks, Laura

Laura, just to warn you, those aren't even pictures of the laptop you're buying..

This is the 904HD, it's basically an Eee 900 in the body of a 1000 series Eee.

laptopsdirect are well known for doing that..

If you're still wanting to use them, this isn't a bad price/performance balance.

    Asus 1005HA - Black

    Asus 1005HA - White

I have no connection to laptopsdirect, I have not bought products from them before, so can't advise on delivery charges etc..

If you see any with "Celeron" mentioned in it, scream and run a mile.

Apart from being dead slow they also eat up battery power.

Keep with netbooks built on a minimum of an Atom 1.6 platform.

    Samsung NC10

I'm not recommending the store, but.. to handle and get an idea of screen and keyboard, overall size.. pop into PC World in the Jervis Shopping Center. They have a large selection of just about every brand available, Samsung, Asus, Acer, Dell, Sony.. and a few more brands I can't think of right now.

The best way to appreciate a potential purchase is to have it in your hand. You can hate or love the feel of a netbook pretty quickly, we're all different in our tastes.

    Theire prices are off though..

The atom is hardly a beast of a processor. I could have sworn the celeron was actually better than the atom in some regards as well. I could be wrong though.

It is. The Atom power saves at a cost, I don't know the specifics, but I think the Atom is an 'in order' CPU. The Celeron is not.

The 900 Eee, can churn through certain tasks better than later comparable Eee models.

    ---

Just to say, if you're stuck with a netbook with a Z520 Atom CPU and the Atom 270/280. I would choose the 270/280.

The battery life is great on the Atom Z, but for real world use, with Flash video and various other tasks, it doesn't shine.

I had both, the EEE900 and 901 (Which I currently use) Huge difference when it comes to battery life, one lasts twice as long as the other.

I have yet so see a 9" notebook come with Pentium and couldn't see the reason for it. I don't expect too much from any of them other than browsing and checking emails on the go etc.

not sure what the difference is between a netbook and a laptop to be honest but I'm looking for a really small laptop (maybe thats what a netbook is??!!) I don't know what size the screens are maybe 9"

Looking for a cheap one, cheapest so far I've found is 400

    Laura,

For reviews on laptops and netbooks check out laptopmag.com who do a very good job reviewing an extensive range of laptops. I have been looking for a netbook myself for a while.

Another thing to remember is that you get what you pay for. Stay away from the cheaper netbooks and go with any one of the following, all of which come highly recommended.

    -- Samsung NC10 ~ €350
    -- Asus 1005HA ~ €390
-- Asus 1008HA (More 'svelte', less battery life) ~ €430

Buy from komplett.ie or elara.ie . I have heard horror stories about laptopsdirect.ie messing a customer around.

i bought a samsung nc10 from argos last week for 329 was that happy with it got my girlfriend one as well very very good machine light well put together when closed it looks the piece no cheap plastics ........

quick start up and shut down ......... i had been using an asus eeepc 7014g one of the first notebooks available here easily and that was pants compared to this even beats my sony viao ux50 which i love . ran the windows 7 updater program and everything will be fine if u want to upgrade and have seen many videos of windows seven beta runniing on this machine so alls well there .

also i like the face samsung shyed away from putting to much of there own junk programs on this whis is a real added bonus in my opinion .

the webcam works well and the typing i find much better than the asus has a better feel to it. does not get hot at all really after hours of use still not much heat to talk about .

only downside i can find is the fact they bothered putting xp on the machine if it was vista business etc. could have got a free upgrade to windows 7

I've always found them to be very helpful and professional and my mate just got a laptop there which was delivered in less than 2 days. Can't really fault them myself....

There's a massive thread on here about laptopsdirect and their reputation on here somewhere. It's a case of people making their own decisions on whether to buy really.
