    Hello,

Currently the maximum speed I can get in my area is 3mb, which isn't really great for downloading ect, I was looking to switch to a provider such as BT or upc, who can offer up to 24mb broadband, but they told me that my line would not be able for it

I would just like to know, will this always be the case, or will Rochestown exchange never been enabled for 24mb broadband?

    Thank you,

    Kevin

UPC don't operate on phone lines, so it has nothing to do with the exchange. BT, and others, who offer up to 24Mbps only do so on a hand full of exchanges, and even then you won't realistically get 24Mbps.

If your line is of such poor quality that you can't get the 7Mbps or 7.6Mbps that is now nationwide on all eircom enabled exchanges, then you're never going to get close to 24Mbps.

UPC may be expanding their network, and you may get coverage from them some day.

As jor el said UPC don't operate on phone lines, they use cable. Most of Rochestown is covered for UPC as far as I know, only parts up by Mount Oval which aren't. UPC also offer good speeds up to 20mb for a fairly decent price.

    Exchanges are being updated

The physical line from the Exchange to your house is rarely if ever updated. And not by BT.

As you're clearly one of the most knowledgeable posters I'd like to hijack the thread for myself for second - any help, even pointing towards the many threads I've undoubtedly missed would be greatly appreciated.

The local exchange here is finally being upgraded for broadband by Eircom next month and I was wondering how intensive a process is it upgrade an exchange, and once on-site work begins roughly how long will it take to be completed? One other thing - what is the rough estimate as to the distance from the exchange to speed ratio? I'm about three and a half miles from the exchange, but I know that the meandering nature of telephone lines means the distance through the wires is probably longer than that.

Again, thank you for any help!

Shouldn't take them too long to finish work in the exchange, but I couldn't say how long exactly. Being about 3.5 miles is bad for you, as that's close to the edge. You'll probably only get 1-2Mbps, and I'd say not a lot more.

There's lots of info on this site
    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/max_speed_calc.php
    http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm

What you can get will all depend on how good your line is, and how long it actually is too. You won't know any of that until all exchange work is completed.

Anyone have any idea how long it will be before UPC will be able to offer broadband in the Killiney area?
