I just read an article on CNet uk that BBC iplayer is coming to freesat this year. Is there any truth to this and if so will we be able to access it here in the ROI given that this is restricted on the internet.

Will it be possible for BBC to restrict the iplayer on the the freesat system or are we in luck?

Is it true that this will be via the ethernet port and onto a hard drive within a Freesat box?. It would be virtually impossible to have a VOD type service on satellite I would think.

Yeah I'd forgotton about the Ethernet connection. Therefore I would imagine that we won't be able to get it as we won't have a valid ip address, yes?

    That's how I'd see it.

I have a bush BFSAT01HD box, and it looks like they've just released BBC iplayer for it:
    http://www.joinfreesat.co.uk/index.php/bbc-iplayer-to-launch-on-technisat-harvard-pt2
It downloaded the updates earlier & the menu works ok, but it won't stream the video. I'm assuming it's because of the non UK IP address.
With a browser I can use a proxy server. Any thoughts on what I can do with my freesat box?
    Thanks.

    details on freesat ch999

Pretty sure it's restricted by ip address.

It'll be a while before i get to experiment, as i'm currently using a 3g dongle, but i'd be interested if there is a way around any ip restriction

It will be possible to view IPlayer outside the UK, but you will have to use a proxy server to get a UK IP address ,

I have a Sony Freesat TV and tried to get the iPlayer working with a free VPN, but it wouldn't work due to low bandwidth or high ping times or both.

But the TV is DLNA compliant, so I got iPlayer working through PlayOn, which is a DLNA server which runs on my PC and can buffer the Video. Menu is basic compared to the Freesat version I'm sure, but the Video content is there(only really works during off peak times though). with PlayOn I can also get American content from sites like Hulu.com using hotspotshield which works very well for free.

I am tempted to try some of the premium VPN providers to get reliable conectivity with iPlayer. How reliable are these in comparison to the free services?

Also noticed that the TV will not allow access to BBC red button service at all, unless I am connected to a UK VPN or disconnect it from the network which is a bit annoying.

I can access the red button and menu's but it just shows loading when trying to stream a video! Ive tried running it through a UK IP address via the ethernet port on a laptop connected to my router but cant seem to get that to work either.

If you are using a vpn then try using internet connection sharing to share the vpn connection not your normal internet adapter

or install freeproxy to use your laptop as proxy server. Will involve manually setting proxy settings on the TV/STB also.

.( I have not found a free UK VPN with enough bandwidth yet most only giving 1/2 a meg this could be your problem too)
