ok so i'm starting science in nuig in september but don't know which subject block to choose. its between:
Group C: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics or Introduction to Mathematical Physics
    or
Group D: Biology, Chemistry, Introduction to Earth & Ocean Sciences and Mathematics or Introduction to Mathematical Physics

now i only did biology at leaving cert. i think i could get the hang of chemistry after a while, but dreading the thought of physics, but would do it to keep the option doing science teaching after the degree. but earth and ocean science seems much more suited to me...just dont know.

is there any time period to change your subject group after they start?

just would like some suggestions from peolpe who have done the course or are still doing it.
    thanks in advance!:D

I can't answer the part about switching tbh but I can tell you that you wouldn't need physics to be able to teach science.

You could teach LC in whatever subject your degree is in (LC chem for a BSc in chem or LC bio for any BSc in bio) and junior cert science with any science degree because you'd know way more than junior cert physics just from taking one year of chemistry (imo at least, having taken the intro to chem module 2 years ago).

You'll also be able to teach junior cert maths. (Just saying)

    Short and sweet: yes.

so i'll be able to teach junior cert physics without ever doing it? is there anywhere i could get this confirmed?

Junior cert physics is incorporated into the one science subject, then broken into seperate (chem, bio and physics) for leaving...

i know that but i would still would have to be able to teach it as its part of one science subject for junior cert, and can't understand how i would be qualified without ever doing it.

    not really......
my advice is pick c because it leaves you with so many subject choices for next year..... There is no point in thinking of going teaching and picking stupid subjects like earth and ocean science as its not a subject for schools.....
I picked C and Im qualified to teach JC science, Maths, LC Hons/ Pass chem, pass Maths and biology. Hate physics so wouldn go near it for the dip...

There is so much help available for physics and chemistry in nuig...extra tutorials and labs and even the lecturers will give ya grinds free the odd time..attend the lectures and tutorials....I never did physics until 1st yr and it was ok...

I took the easy way out and went for group D.

Although Earth and Ocean Science was very interesting, unless you really want to get into geology or something you'd be better off doing group C as it opens up alot more subject choices later on (Quite a few subjects require physics)

I wasn't sure exactly what I wanted to do at the time (still don't know) so I went with D as, like yourself, I didnt fancy doing physics. The funny thing is I'm doing IT now and had to do it anyway!

So yea, go with group C and do your best, you'll be thankful later.
