I know it's totally contraversial to the subtitle of the forum but it's supposed to be kind of relaxing topic,so :
How do you get the busy look in the office? It's not a secret that some people in the offices are not that busy as they look. I need some "experts'" ;) advice how to look busy at work.

As long as I remember that spelling above ...it would keep me straight faced all day tbh...

I find that simply furrowing ones brow immediatley gives an impression of concentration. Very useful when going for the "busy" look.

Walk around the office with two completely random objects in each hand staring at either the roof titles or skirting boards.

    Good options are;
A large power drill in one hand and bottle of ketchup or slicedpan.
A handsaw and a large wheel of cheese.

Walk around with a briefcase overflowing with random pieces of paper in one hand and a folder and pen in the other while also looking preoccupied.

If you want to actually be kept busy while at your desk, cut holes into your pockets, take some viagra ... and shazam, sorted for the day! :P

Walk around the office as if you know where you're going. Look purposeful, walk quickly, don't answer questions with anything other than single word answers such as "Busy", or just grunt. That would also be the perfect time to look at a piece of paper as if it were very important. You could simply walk from your desk to the toilet to the canteen (if your office has one) and back to your desk all day, and no one will question you.

    ask ppl qustions....

like ...did you see that graph on the annual budget report.... then walk off and pretend to look through your workspace...

anyone else asks say looking for the graph (or other sheet of paper)

that way you can sit down and not... have somthing in your hands and walk

while surfing on the web, change the size of the font to a smaller one and then you'll be forced to go closer to the screen, which in turn will make you look preoccupied... worked for me all summer :D

I mastered this skill while on placement during college in a "Big Four" accounting firm.

    1) While at the computer keep a notepad and a calculator next to the keyboard, pen in the mouth optional.

    2) Get about 3 files which you never use and put your scrap paper in there. Use these to walk around the office building with.

    3) The old lowering of the eyebrows and concentrating/pissed off stare never fails.

    4) Hang up on someone or slam the phone down once daily.

The walking around the office for at least a half an hour a day with a piece of paper in you hand is the golden rule of dossing.

A pen behind your ear and rolled up sleeves lends a certain gravitas to ones paper carrying plight

make sure your desk looks like you are trying to build a little fort out of folders and boxes and when anyone comes near you start rooting through them for some random piece of paper and then start tapping away at the keyboard furiously, its worked for me for years, I spend the whole day on boards!! :D

Do laps with a clipboard (open on second sheet - top sheet flapping) and high-lighter pen, pick up the pace towards the end of the week.

I'm watching someone do it now.

Change plugs / cables on something

check the count on the copiers / print test pages from all of the printers at the printer, put in your clip board , compare to previous printouts , hang around printers for a while "checking the print quality" ,

    preventitive maintainance ftw.

I still love the paper clip trick
you need a office for this though
get a box of paper clips and sprinke some paper clips near the door and put the box beside them, now lie down with your arm out stretched beside the door, and have a nice sleep

if anyone opens the door they will wake you up, and you pretend to be picking up the paper clips that fell off your desk
