changing background color

I have a Philips 32 inch flat screen HD ready TV. When a DVD is starting the copyright warning is is white on a dark grey background. But I was in a TV shop yesterday and noticed the background on their TV's is jet black. What do I change? tried contrast but did not make much difference

turn down the brightness,

calibrate the screen using some of the calibration settings on some discs.
THX settings on Monsters inc, starwars and loads more but cant remember off hand .

that should get you started..
