Anyone head out on spins to Howth. Looking to compare times. Started in Finglas, down Griffith Avenue and out by Clontarf, went right in village so took coast route with hill to Howth and back to Finglas in 1hr 36mins today. Total distance 44.55km. Major headwind on the way home. I don't think I've ever cycled home from Howth on a calm day.

That's averaging around 30km/h, with Howth head thrown in, which would be faster than I can manage. I came in around 28km/h @ ~75% max hr the last time I did Howth over a similar distance and route.

I like Howth. Been tackling the Sutton-side in my middle-ring recently, which is an improvement for me :o

I would imagine the tailwind you catch on the way out would counteract the headwind on the way back? Not sure if that's the way it works, in reality.

Do you go Sutton to the summit, then down into Howth or Sutton to Summit and back again?

My route of choice recently has been Sutton - Howth - Sutton - the hill up from Howth is shorter but steeper - plus you don't get downhills in the middle of it!! I always find that very disturbing!!

Don't do the exact same spin but similar (Starting from Drumcondra) distance in about 1.40.

I hear you about the wind nearly always seems to be a headwind on the way into town from Howth.

The headwind is your chance to work hard and get stronger.

... and if you turn right at the church, it's steeper still!

That Sutton-Howth-(Uturn)-Sutton route is my own, too. I love the descent back into Sutton by the graveyard :D

I've tried going right at the church and I've yet to make it up that way!! I know, I'm basically crap at climbing but I'm getting better!!!

I don't like the descent into Howth village - too many idiots coming out of side streets - into Sutton is pretty nice. It has a continental feel to it (not that I've ever cycled on the continent!)

I think a better time check would be best time from Howth village at the right turn to the shop at the top. I think I was around the 8 minutes 30secs the last time I checked.

Yeah it's a good way to get stronger alright. When I'm out on my own it's a real mental challenge against the breeze. I just keep my head down and hammer away.

Is Sutton the town that has the Superquinn on the left of the fork road. Usually go right at that Superquinn and then take a left that brings me along the coast past the dinghy club, then up a nice hile and into Howth and back out past the Superquinn and then meet the headwind. Try to stay on the road as the little wall gives me a bit of shelter although that road surface is rubbish and there's a few dodgy potholes so for safety reasons I really should be using the cycle lane.

Anyone up for a spin out there tomorrow during the day?

Yeah, it's best not to descend fast into the village. I wouldn't expect a car to drive through the village as fast as it's possible for a cyclist to descent through it so I don't do it.

If you want another nice route, as you ascend past the grave yard, you carry on up to the downhill bit, then when it ramps up again, take the left up the concrete road. Follow that road to the left, don't go right. Eventually you come to another ramp. Fun times.

In the Dublin Wheelers TT league we started outside the football pitch on the left, just where there is a tiny concrete ramp from road to path. Just across the road from the school. The finish is just level with the shop at the top.

That coming from the Sutton side? What kind of times were people doing on that route?

    Aye. Results here:http://www.dublinwheelers.com/forum/viewthread.php?thread_id=114

We did Howth twice, so you should find two sets of results there.

Can you give that exact route again? Going to time myself out there next time.

7 minutes is good but they don't get time to appreciate the scenery like we do :D

Arrive at Sutton Cross, coming from town.
    Turn right.
Go through the set of lights, when they are green of course ;)
The road will start to rise slightly.
Go past a couple of turns to the right for housing estates.
You are approaching a school on the right which has a bus stop outside it.
Directly across the road is a gate for football pitches.
There is some concrete joining the road to the path to make it easy for cars to get up.
    Start there.
Finish adjacent to the wall behind the shop at the top. I.e. it backs onto the main road, so you finish on the main road level with the back of the shop.
    Make sense?

I do a very similar route. Iona road - clonliffe road - coast road - howth then back the same way i came. Theres always a tailwind / headwind or vice versa. Heres some of my stats fomr the polar cs200

    Distance 40.1 km
    Calories 1346 kcal
    Duration 1hh:27mm:55ss

    Average heart rate 160 bpm
    Maximum heart rate 197 bpm

    Speed avg 27.4 km/h
    Speed max 57.4 km/h
    Cadence avg 92 rpm
    Cadence max 116 rpm

I'd class myself as an cycle enthusiast who does the odd sportive, watchs some of the tours and wins fantasy cycling leagues. Ive a friend who could do the same thing but 20 beats lower. The wanker :)

Yes, crystal clear. Usually take the coast route you see so hadn't passed that football pitch you're on about before. Will post up a time so. Is 7 min 30secs like really quick?

197 bpm. didn't think that was possible without getting a heart attack. I got to 173bpm today. Avg 141
    Avg Speed 27.3
    Max Speed 54.3
    Distance 44.55km

Can anyone tell me what the odometer on is for?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,679 ✭✭✭bcmf

the odometer gives you a complete total of kms/mls you have done.

    Did Howth to-day.
    Balbriggan -Swords*-Finglas-Clonliffe-Coast Rd.-Sutton x- Howth-Howth Village-Sutton x**-Baldoyle-Portmarnock***-Malahide-Swords-N1-puncture-legs gave up-Home-Ate Fridge.
It was one of those days that the only place the wind was on my back was the coast rd.The rest I seemed to be either into a headwind or the wrong side of the crosswind.

Faster boardsies out there than me though. I knocked it down to 7.17 the other week in practice.

197 bpm. didn't think that was possible without getting a heart attack.

Im 24 so my max heart rate is 196. I guess i was giving 101% ;)

my max heart rate should be 183, using the 220 - age, but I've had mine up @the 220 mark, I think those calculations are based on the average Joe, correct me if I'm wrong, my resting HR at wakening is 59 bpm, but then again hills combined with my 17 stone frame would definitely get the HR up

I think I've had enough of TTs up Howth for this year. Will have to have another go next year. :)

    The horrible formula is 220 - age -> 196! , though I regularly get mine to 200+ @ 25..

@37 you've had your hr at 220? Isn't that like a heart attack ? Impressive going
