Weanling trade looking seriously bad at the moment. Show and sale in Ennis this week, was an absolute joke.
Once the first few pens with the prize winners etc, were put through, the sale just collapsed.
Some super quality lighter heifers making less than €200 with the weight.

I was in Carrigallen last week and there were mixed prices. Cattle that were badly done, made very poor prices, but a good animal was still ok. Well fed heifers were bringing almost €300 with their weight. Bulls were hitting the €400 min. If they were well done.

It wasn't as good as last year, but still not as bad as the papers were reporting. Good strong export trade there. Important to have the 30 day test.

In short, older cattle and cattle that weren't suitable for export were poor. Not many farmers buying.

i was in mounthrath last thursday and the sale was a joke.the exporters were not bidding against each other. one e grade blue bull came in the ring very early he weighed 500 k but he was a feb 08 calf there was a couple of bids to 1000 euros, he came back in later and made 1500 eur ,i think shippers know farmers are under pressure for money and they dont have to bid up the prices. the italians are ment to be mad for our cattle, i came home very angry. a 400 kilo bull last year 1000 euro same bull and quality this year 750 euros.there was very few animals that made over 1000 euros. a question for you , why do people sell all there stock in marts in singles, down in the south -east they are generally sold in bunches,i am thinking of going to tullow mart with my stock this year and they generally sell in singles there, but i am going to put all the muscle in one lot and hope that the shippers fight for them, not wanting the other to get 8 -10 bulls in one lot,

I wasnt there myself but I heard Roscrea mart stopped 3/4 way through 2 weeks ago. I think banks are putting a lot of pressure on ppl to sell. Is there any point waiting till 1st sfp comes out in Sept?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

I was in Elphin last night. Hoping to bring 10 to it next week. Well fed bull weinlings were making €2 per kilo minimum. If you had a poor calf, that wasn't suitable for export, then prices were poor. There was only 1 good weinling heifer in the place - 350kg and made €645.

A lot of cows in the place and I can see more coming out in the next few weeks. Every farmer in the country is talking about cutting down on cows. Seems like a good time to get into more for me. Sold all my sheep last week.

I was in Elphin last night. I brought 9. 3 bulls and 6 heifers. The bulls were a good trade. Had one 420kg and he made €900. Another 400kg and he made €880.

But I was disappointed with the heifers. Best heifer was 380kg and she made €580. The rest made €150 to €180 along with their weight.

Overall I'm down a few Euro per head on last year. The weather isn't helping at all - normal years farmers would be buying to let out on after grass and feed for the winter indoors, but there just isn't any grass.

The 200kg weinling won't be worth €300 in the coming weeks. And there are lots of them to come out yet.

A lot of cows in the mart last night. Cattle will be scarce in our area this time next year. Think a fellow will have to try to struggle on and keep what he has to keep and hope that we get a bit of good weather for the next 2 months to prolong the winter a bit.

I still have 15 Belgian Blues to sell. 9 heifers and 6 Bulls. I hope to be able to keep them for the winter and sell them in march - try to put them all to 400kg+, but that will depend on whether I get my silage cut over the next 2 weeks. Cows are going onto the first 5 acres of it today. Leaving 25 to cut if the weather ever takes up.

380kg heifer weanling, is bloody heavy :o What age? Was she sucking the creep feeder more than the cow? Maybe she was over fat .. buyers do not like too much coover on heifers in particular

She was 11 months. She got no creep up until the last 2 months and she got it ad lib from then. 380kg is heavy for a breeding heifer, but she was a beef heifer and I know the butcher that bought her. He says he will fatten her for another 2 months and she will be slaughtered for christmas.

My neighbour had bulls in Ennis to day,

his top bull 7/8 BB ,420 kgs €1420

    others bb X lm 420 - 450 kgs sold for €1000 to €1200

he had a couple of 09 calves weighting 300 - 350 kgs these were making €700 to €880 which he didn't sell.

the lighter plainer calves were a poor trade.
