My son in the UK had recently upgraded to an iPhone 3G S when he was given a similar phone in his new job. He wants to give me his other phone.

Can anyone explain in laymans language what steps, if any, I will need to take so that the iPhone 3G S from 02 UK will work with my vodaphone sim card?

I just want to start in the right place so that I wont mess up the whole thing & I'm not really iPhone literate... YET!!! :D

    Thanks in advance.

    Gerry

There's a great sticky at the top of the forum with loads of great info on what you need to do - here's a direct link:

    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055508399

In the first post of the sticky Tom Dunne mentions iClarified as a good site to find the instructions and files to Jailbreak and Unlock iPhones - and I'd agree - iClarified has really clear simple and detailed instructions on the various ways of hacking the iPhone - here's a direct link to the iPhone section of iClarified http://www.iclarified.com/tutorials/iphone/index.php

Thanks for taking the time to reply...

The problem for me is that I'm meeting a new language with words like Jailbreak, Cydia, ultrasnow, and purplera1n and I must admit I'm getting a bit spooked.

    But I will persevere.... ;)

Just go to one of the Chinese phone shops which are in most towns and cities in Ireland and they'll unlock it for you.

    Jailbreak first
    Unlock second

I have to be honest here, the terms were new to all of us at one stage.

There is even a video on that link showing you what to do.

Don't be afraid, you can't do any damage (well, you can, but it's nothing that can't be easily fixed with a quick restore :)).

I had the same experience when I got my IPhone 3G but I found that it was really easy to unlock, just read up as much as you can and go for it; I had to do it over again when my first attempt failed, I tried to unlock version 3.0.1 and failed, I thought that my IPhone was bricked but connected to Itunes and restored it to its factory defaults, you can do this anytime you go wrong,

I used ITunes to downgrade to V3.0.0 then used Redsnow to jailbreak/unlock its working fine on Vodafone

    Ye're gas men! :pac:

Thanks for all the help. I can't wait to get my hands on it & I looking forward even more to using words like jailbreaking and ultrasnow when I explain to my friends how I unlocked it!!! :D

Oh that's just one of the many benefits of having an iPhone :p Think of how superior you're gonna feel when someone takes out their Sony Ericsson piece of sh*t and you're playing Sonic the Hedgehog on your iPhone :D

    Hi Guys
Need your help. I'm following the jailbreak Step by Step.

    I've downloaded Redsn0w.

I've used the link to download the latest 3.0 firmware.

I've attached the iPhone & started iTunes.

I've held down Shift & clicked on Restore.

Then the problem! I don't seem to have the firmware ispw file.

I've tried downloading again but still no ispw. I'm stuck!!!

    Anyone please!!!

If iTunes downloaded it fully, you should have it. Are you using a Windows PC? You could just use Windows search to look for *.ipsw (not ispw) and it should find it...

I think I'm missing something... I'm not using iTunes to download anything... ??

Where did you get the firmware (the ipsw file) from then? iTunes downloads it for you when an update is available though right now it would try to download version 3.0.1 rather than 3.0 which might be better to work with.

There's a link with the step by step instructions (below). All I get is a folder with some files in it. No ispw though.

That's weird - I clicked on your link and I get the ipsw download, no problem. I'm on a Mac, but that should make no difference just for downloading the file...

I don't understand. I have a decent broadband connection but it takes 15 minutes to download and I get a folder with two subfolders called "fseventds" & "firmware". There's also 8 other files. Nothing resembles ipsw!

Very frustrating... I'm mad to get this iPhone running!!

What browser are you using? It wouldn't have anything to do with your broadband connection but maybe there's a download manager installed or something screwing up the download. If you're using IE, maybe try downloading it with Firefox or the opposite?

Hey J-blk... you've lost me now! I'm using IE8. Not sure how to get Firefox. On the site where I got the step by step, a lot of people seem to have the same problem... Sorry to be taking so much of your time... I've been trying to get this done since 4 o'clock!

Well, you can download Firefox here:

    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/personal.html

The problem though is that if IE8 is screwing up your downloads, even the Firefox download may not go to plan :(. Try it though and see if you can install Firefox, then copy the link for the ipsw and paste it into the address bar of Firefox to download it.
Sorry to be taking so much of your time...

No problem, let's see if we can get you up and running :). The link you have is good though, I can at least confirm that since it works on my end...

I had the same problem as gerrymadden when I was trying to jailbreak my touch last night(using redsn0w). It took me 'til 3 this morning to find the .ipsw, it wasn't saved on my computer anywhere I could find so I just ended up doing a google for "iPod Software Updates\iPod2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw" and found a lot of sites with the download available. Got it downloaded to the desktop and away I went! How easy is it after that eh? If only I hadn't been scared of it all I would have done this months ago!:pac:
