I have just completed a business and IT degree in the UK and was hoping to get onto a secondary PGCE over there but it didnt workout for this year. Hence I find myself looking for a job for a year before I reapply in october for next year. I was hoping I might get some subbing/supervision work in secondary schools to boost my application for pgce. I rang around a few schools and was told to send in my CV. I was under the impression that there was little or no subbing work to be got anymore with all the cut-backs etc! from what the 4 schools i called said it seems like its business as normal!

my question is how much do sub teachers/supervisors get paid? my friend told me it is approx €50/hour. is this right?

Most schools cover their supervision and substitution needs from a scheme staff sign up to - usually for three hours every two weeks.

Outside that, the first port of call would be existing part-time teachers known to the school. After that they would go to a list of casual people.

So, whatever impression the schools gave you, you'd be way down the line when allocating classes. Your best chance would be to go in on spec and see can you catch the first one or two classes each day.

I handle the subbing in our place one day a week. I would have to call outside the S&S roster or current staff only maybe once a month or so.

    From the TUI site:
    Part-Time Hourly Rate (Second Level)

    1. Qualified casual hourly rate (incl. 22% holiday pay) = €49.60

    2. Unqualified hourly rate (incl. 22% holiday pay) = €43.00

    3. Qualified non-casual rate to teacher paid according to their own personal point on the incremental salary scale plus allowances divided by 735. This will give the personal hourly rate. There is no additional payment for holiday periods as this figure includes 56% holiday pay.

Supervision and Substitution Rate @ 1/9/08
    €50.34 per hour
