Right, I'm recording from my Sky+ box onto my PC using a Mercury TV Card.

The various recording formats I have on option are:
    MPEG1 ** this seems average **
    MPEG2 ** this seems average **
    VCD (352x240)
    SVCD (480x480)
    DVD (720x480)
    OTHER (320x240)
AVI ** this appears to be raw format .. this is far too big! **
    MS-MPEG4 (320x240) ** this option is greyed out **

I can also chose Bitrate (higher is better?????).

Then I can chose these under capture settings:
    Stream format YUY2 / RGB555 / UYVY
    Output Size 320x240 / 352x240 / 640x240 / 640x480 / 720x480

Basically I'm looking for something with a similair quality to the popular DIVX files you may download off the internet. Something that is decent enough for me to rewatch as close to the quality of the Sky+ box as possible.

Any information or thoughts here are welcomed please :)

    DVD (720x480)
    High bitrate is better.

This will be better than divx if the bitrate is high.

But that's going to mean massive filesize isn't it?

Use Erightsoft super (free program) to encode the files to AVI/XVID. No loss in quality.

    30mins @ DVD qual = 1gb
    30mins @ AVI/XVID = 200mb
