    EI-JFK departs Shannon
    Friday, August 14, 2009

Aer Lingus A330-301 EI-JFK departed Shannon as EIN 2500 for Chateauroux in France this morning. The aircraft performed it's last flight for Aer Lingus on the New York JFK - Shannon route on Wednesday last, August 12. EI-JFK, msn 86 has been with Aer Lingus since 1995 and is now being prepared for return to lessor after which it will be transferred to Vladivostok Avia.
It is expected that the aircraft will be painted in Chateauroux where the ATE hangar facilities can handle up to A340 size aircraft. No doubt JFK will reappear in Shannon in due course for final tweaks before handover.

Snagged it on the SBS1 for the flight to Chateauroux on the 14th August. Operated out of Shannon as EIN2500, picked it up at 10:04 at 28,875 ft and then lost it at 10:13 at 35,000 ft .

Interestingly EI were the first carrier to operate twin jets over the Atlantic under ETOPS (Extended Twin engine OperationS?) rules. Thus EI were being watched by a lot of other airlines to see how they did. EI tested the rules that allow all those American/Continental/US/Delta B757s to operate into DUB.

Sorry, that's not correct. Aer Lingus was first to use the A330 transatlantic, as its relatively short T/A routes could be flown with what was originally intended as a medium-range aircraft. However carriers such as Air Canada, TWA and El Al were the pioneers of transatlantic ETOPS with 767s from the mid-1980s and by the time Aer Lingus began A330 operations there was little left to be proved.

Apologies. I had been given the impression that the A330 was one of the first twins to do ETOPS across the Atlantic. I believed that all previous B767 ops had used routings closer to diversion points.
