Adding discs to regular MTB wheels

    Hi Guys,

Got my wheels stolen last week.
My Kryptonite saved the frame, and the damaged lock will be replaced free by the manufacturer :)
Anyway, I have a set of regular wheels from a supermarket, which I'd like to use.
The only problem is the stolen ones had discs (for brakes) and these don't.
Is it possible to add discs to regular wheels?
Any suggestions on where I can pick em up?

    TIA,
    HD

    HD,

Sorry to hear about your wheels. Disc brakes require disc specific hubs. You might be able to use the rims and MAYBE the spokes from your remaining wheels, but you'd need to buy disc specific hubs and have them built up.

Tyres, tube and cassette are also needed and must be considered when pricing.

Just following on from this, I tried to transfer the regular brakes from the supermarket bike.
The bolt from the supermarket rear brakes, is too small for the socket on my Kona Blast frame.
Does anyone know is there 2 sizes of bolts for these brakes?
As for the front brakes on the forks, they seem to already have small 2 bars sticking out with allen key sockets that don't seem turnable - ie: part of the forks.
I'd be happy to just get the rear brakes working..
    Any ideas ?

    TIA<

    Photos?

Does the supermarket bike have v-brakes or something else?

You'd be far better off getting just the front brake working if you just have one brake.

Something like these, only plastic - high quality ;)

In order to fit those (canti) brakes you'll need to have the appropriate bosses on your bike.

    These on the rear:

    and these on the front:

Since your bike originally had disc brakes these may not be present.

    Ah, thanks for the response..
I think the problem on the rear is the wee bars have been removed.
They seem to be removable from the photo above..
Need to check if I can remove them from my supermarket bike :)
    Thanks for the advice

All kona bikes have V-brake mounts. They are covered with a plastic blank. The actual mounts (like a bar popping out) is found in the box of bits along with the pedals and manual, all Hardtail konas come with these. Any Kona dealer will have them lying around.

Aye, bikes which come stock with discs will often have the bosses removed because they look silly and could take an eye or kneecap out in the wrong circumstances. Cheaper bikes/frames will rarely have removable bosses, but you might be lucky.

I'm not sure if they're a standard size, but a Kona supplier should have them anyway.

    Thanks for the help guys.
I'm getting a good understanding of it now. I need 2 boses
If the bosses are not removable from the supermarket bike I'll just use a sledge to get em off - problem solved ;)
I might have a front disc wheel sorted, so just need boses for back wheel :)
