Does toasted white bread make any different over untoasted? Does it make any better?

Does toasting brown bread take any of the "goodness" out of it?

I don't think so , The difference in nutritonal value would be so little as to be trivial , the toast will be lighter as water is lost .

Lightly toasted would be preferable to burnt though . I think what is more important is what you put on the bread or toast ;)

People keep talking about white bread being worse than brown bread in general so I was wondering if (as stupid as the question probably was) toasting it made any difference.

No, it just makes it absorb more butter.

I hope you were not hinting that "browning" white bread might make it better!

When I was small my mother defrosted some brown wholegrain bread in a white bread wrapper, it was the first time I ever saw her freeze bread. I think she put it in a paper white bread wrapper to defrost better. Then she took out this brown bread and I was convinced that freezing it turned it brown and put the little bits of grain in it!. For ages I kept asking her to freeze the bread saying it tasted much better and she wouldn't saying it tasted worse!

If it is burnt to a cinder I expect it loses some goodness, and I have heard it could be a cause of cancer (burnt toast), but sure almost every single food is rumoured to cause cancer.

Toasting or grilling certain foods (incl bread) results in a chemical called Acrylamide to form from the proteins and CHOs anmd it's a potent carcinogen. The odds of you eating enough to actually make yourself ill are slim but it is always good to practice moderation with these things.
