I am toying with the idea of going travelling on my own around the world,,
probably just a pipe dream, but just in case..

what are the best websites to help you start planning your trip? I dont know where to start, i have an idea of the places id like to go see, but i want to be flexible too..

I would like to just make my way east and keep going, until i return back home..

The folks over in Indy travel would be better suited to help with your query, but there is a sticky in the Travel & Holidays forum with plenty of useful links to get you started.

    Moved.

From what you said i think you're best option is not to worry too much about plans and just go for it. Knowing what direction you are heading is all you really need to know before hand. Once you start reading into things you'll hear of scams and how 'dangerous' places are and then you'll start thinking about that aspect of it. But it's all common sense. Anyways the people you meet along the way are the best source in figuring out an itinerary. The first time i went traveling i spent months preparing and researching places and drawing up an itinerary. I think the only part i actually stuck to was the flight into Mexico and everything i had read wasn't of much help. I also packed unnecessary stuff due to what i read too. My second time my backpack was half the weight and i was alone without a plan. And everything worked out. I know before a big trip that you are looking forward to there is always the want to just read up on sh1t. Just one tip though. Don't be too ambitious if you go to South America. The continent is huge and it's a lot of effort trying to see lots in a short period of time.

But if you wanna check out some sites that are useful there are always the following

    http://www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree/index.jspa
    http://www.hobotraveler.com/
    http://www.worldtravelguide.net/country/
    http://www.bootsnall.com/

    http://www.travelblog.org/
    http://www.ubertramp.com/
    http://www.travelpod.com/

Also http://www.couchsurfing.org/ if you want to meet people through that site who can tell you about places or stay with them.
