I bought a stick of 256 mb ram for my dell latitude cpx

When I switch on , it says that emmory is decreasing - failure etc

If I switch on with this new stick only , laptop will not come on , but will automatically of after about 10 seconds .

    What could be wrong

The new ram could be fried, it might not be sitting correctly. Have you taken out the RAM and put it back in? Obviously remove the power supply and battery before doing this!

I have of course switched of the laptop and disconnected the power supply.

Do I have to take out the battery as well ,
could this be why the ram wont work

Ram has just arrived from hong kong

The same thing happened to my dad the other day, took ram out,put new ram in,tried to turn on laptop and it wouldn't start,I got it to turn on,I just took the laptop batery out, waited a bit and put it back in,and it was fine after that.

so yes, just tried taking the battery out

    Just reseat it.

Spent two hours trying to figure out why a Toshiba I had wouldn't boot after I'd put two new modules into it. Turns out one of the sticks I thought was properly seated, wasn't.

It took a surprising amount of force to actually get it in correctly and making contact with the pins.

You might also have static-zapped it, if you weren't careful when placing it.

to be fair ive got loads of stuff from HK fine. But being ram, and stupidly sensitive to static, who knows what happened to it. Could be busted though.

I'm always one for repairing laptops but the CPX model of the Latitude is very old, and at this stage would struggle running most modern applications. If the ram turns out to be fried, cut your losses and dont spend more money on it.
As stated above though, firstly try removing the stick of ram and see does the laptop turn on as normal before you had installed the new ram. If it does work , grand we can assume it was an issue with the first installation of the ram and try again. Resit the ram in its slot and make sure it clips into place with the securing locks either side. Once thats done, try turning it on again and see if your in business.
