Routes round Waterford

Heading down to Tramore on Thursday for a week and half (porbably) so looking to do a bit of riding round the sunny South East (always seems to be pishing every time I go down but I live in hope :D).

I generally like rides around 50-70 miles.

Where I live the terrain is pretty rolling (it's either up or down and not much flat) so don't mind if there are some hills.

    Any suggestions for routes?

What's the quality of the roads like as I'm trying to decide which bike to bring and it just might help me to make up my mind? I guess it's much like anywhere a mix of good and bad.

try tramore ,waterford to newross to wexford or cut off ,all on good roads with hard shoulders ,to the round about and down the duncannon rd back to ballyhack ferry that will bring you back into waterford again.

not sure of the spin but the roads would be good with nothing to savage on them .

failing that the sean kelly is on

We did this route on Saturday which was all very pleasant. Obviously this would be too long (300km) but the section down by the coast near Tramore there was very nice. More photos here

Try heading down the Coast Road down to Dungarvan(copper coast route). you could either turn around and come home the coast rd., or back up the main cork Rd(not so scenic). Doing that round trip is just over 90k.
To make it shorter you could turn off either at Kilmurrin cove or Bunmahon and head towards Kill and back onto the Coast rd through Dunhill...that would give you a 40 and a 50k route.
Terrain is pretty much rolling all the way!
You could head out to Waterford, out to the Cork Road and then cut across under the mountains at Mahonbridge, on to Carrick and home by fiddown...think that;s about 80/90k, and relatively flat.

For some parts of the road you may feel like swapping your bike for a jeep! It's a pretty mixed bag, make sure you've got your spares!

    Enjoy!

Great stuff. I will check them all out on bikehike.co.uk this evening. Was thinking of the SKT however I think the ride out from Tramore is probably too much then the tour on top of it - even the 100km route which I was thinking off.

The 100km is quite flat, you could well manage it. Coast road Tramore to Dungarvan is 40km.

Tramore to Waterford following the coast via Dunmore, Woodstown, Passage East is a nice spin - you can head back to tramore any way you like then - either tack on some more distance out towards Portlaw or head out the main road.
Quite hilly between Tramore and Dunmore.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Me and fully laden rucksack arrived Thursday without a hitch (though with the subsidence on the Belfast - Dublin line my trip home will be a lot more eventful especially I had bought a return )

Didn't get out yesterday other than a spin in and out of Wateford to watch the ToI.

So today finally got out. Decided to do the Copper Coast Road to Dungarven, as suggested, and then came back by main Dungarven - Wateford Road (N25). 62.35 miles (100km) on the clock and an average speed of 16.5mph (26.5kph) and certainly felt it especially that headwind from Waterford back to Tramore. I have found the bit I hate the most everytime and that is those finally 2 climbs up to Monvoy Valley. They are an absolute killer - not cool down with those climbs there. Lovely scenic route to Dungarven via the Copper Coast Road and that road through Fenor (where the road had been spray tarmaced and the stones thrown down being bumpy as hell) certainly meant I had chosen the right bike to bring. The titanium helped the old saddle area much more than the carbon would have done so glad I brought it.

Was temped on the way back to head for Mahon Falls falls however glad I didn't as I was wrecked when I got back so I'll do that run next week.

Just looking on the club website linked and above and that route up to Seskin Hill and back looks like it would a good one to do too. Also want to head out the other direction to Dunmore East and round that part of the coast because I've been out that way in the car just to get dinner in a really nice seafood restaurant. Got the most amazing smoked salmon and seafood bouillibase (sp?). A few years ago but can still taste it now. It was off season and we were the only ones in the restaurant - ah well still loved it.

    Roll the next ride :D

    Andun,

I'm around Waterford for the next while (except Wed/Thursday probably) if you fancy a spin. I was thinking about hooking up with the sportif club - they may be heading out on Monday morning.

Thanks a lot for the offer and I may take you up on that later in the week. Only heading out now today but and I'll be doing a route along the lines of the one you suggested out Passage East direction. Should be a nice run and the sun has come out too :D
