I'm currently doing a BEng in Mechanical Engineering at NUIG and am considering joining up as an engineer.

Does anyone have any info on the requirements for it? I need to wear specs to see clearly more than 6 inches from my face, so I don't know for sure if that'll be a downside.

I've sent off for more info from the website about it just now too.

Well, once you have a degree recognised by engineers Ireland you can go the officer route. Either cadet or direct entry (unlikely to looked for them again.) Finish college and get your eyes sorted. You could also go to ordnance with a degree in mech. Have a look at the requirements for the cadets medical and physical. you will have to do a YO`s cse in each which don’t come around each year so there may be wait before you can undertake any corps work. Best of luck. By the way there is a an RDF engineer unit in galway have a look at them to get a taste.

Sounds like your eyesight is fairly poor, that might be a bit of a problem, and the DF don't currently accept people with eye surgery. I'll recommend the RDF engineers in Galway too, but unfortunately theres a moratorium on recruitment for the foreseeable future so they won't be able to take you on.

And its a BE, not a BEng!

update the eye surgery is going to change. there are three different types of operation as far as i know and two will be accepted. sorry dont know which ones or when but it will be in the coming year from what i have heard.

will it not show on medical records?

if it does, they have access to them - and telling porkies will get you kicked out quicker than being blind as a bat.

If you can get in later, I'll +1 the Galway engineers.

They train beside us and seem on the ball.

I'll agree with that, I know a few of them and they're very professional.
