Below is the good news for the telephone and internet users in ireland, Broadband is very expensive in ireland as compared to all other EU countries. I am glad to hear this news. It will reduce the monthly cost for the consumer as well as it will create positive compition between IPTV and cable provider (UPC & SKY) as IPTV prices will reduce with more features available.

The Communications Regulator (ComReg) has slashed the monthly fees broadband providers must pay eircom for using eircom lines to provide their services.

The current charge is €8.41 per line per month. ComReg has cut this to 77c per month in a direction announced this evening.

ComReg said it believed the new cost "will ensure that the provision of broadband...will no longer be impeded by the current high charge, which creates negative incentives to further investment in critical infrastructure".

BT Ireland boss Chris Clark said: "BT welcomes ComReg’s direction of a substantial price reduction for Local Loop Unbundling. We firmly believe that Local Loop Unbundling has a significant part to play in the creation of competitive high speed broadband in the Irish market."

While not saying the full saving would be passed on to customers, BT said this evening that that "this will provide operators with the flexibility to offer better value for money".

Eircom may appeal the direction. A final decision will be made in October.

That's a huge drop. Bound to have a dramatic affect on pricing. Good news.

The LLU line rental is only one element of LLU pricing. A small percentage of people use LLU.

They need to reduce the retail Line rental to 7 Eur or less. That's what's killing use of fixed lines 82% ---> 66%
