Cycle Track Designs

I always read these threads as I'm an avid cyclist and have recently grown an interest in how cycle schemes are designed. I've started a list of do's/dont's for cycle scheme design using examples from around the place and intend putting my findings to some good use so that the same design mistakes aren't repeated (I've some spare time). The DTO and local councils may as well get advice from people that actually cycle!

Are there any particular designs/layouts you've come across that p@ss you off and how do you think they could be improved? Do you think other designs work really well? Name and shame the locations and I'll be out with my camera!!

Ah fair play pete, I'll be getting involved on that site so. It's no wonder half the people don't use the cycle lanes when you see the stuff that goes on.

best ones i ever rode were in nottingham when i was a student (fair share of dodgy ones as well). generally well thought out (but it was a long time ago)

i think most cycle lanes here are put in as an afterthought

I think that here most of the cycle tracks have been put in as an after thought, same goes for alot of the QBCs as well. I reckon the councils were just given funding to spend on these things and afraid that if they didn't spend it, then they wouldn't be given the funding again next year.

The only thing that can be said for the random red paint on the road is at least it makes cars more aware that there may be a cyclist about.

I'm going to stab a guess and say that's got to do with promoting rural recreation or some other wording to that effect.

i dont know, but how sustrans got suckered it giving money, thought they had more smarts than that. the roads werent touched i cycle part of it regularly and some of the surfaces are atrocious, i suppose she is on fat tyres

Get involved with Dublin Cycling Campaign or cyclist.ie, we've been actively working on these issues for years.

Just noticed how it lurches to the left a little further down the road, for no obvious reason (from the point of view of the cyclist). That's a real classic. Nice pinch point it creates too.

It works on so many levels!
