I wish to start a business acting as an agent to a company in China that sells a range of products. I'm wondering does anyone know anything about this, legalities or otherwise?

Quality control is your main issue there. All the legalities etc would depend on the depth of your role as agent and the type/amounts of products.
Just to give you an example of things that can go wrong, I might order a container of floor tiles after going to a trade show. But the the order arrives and you have different colour tiles in there, some damaged and some the wrong sizes. Thats when the problems begin. If you have said to your client you are going to get X and Y arrives you are left holding the can, and it mightn't be as easy as you think to sort the that kind of problem out with the supplier.

You might also want to check out CE marking. As far as I am aware it is the responsability of the importer to ensure goods produced outside the EU are up to EU standards (even if the manufacturer has a CE label on them).

Not 100% sure, but worth checking out.

I would get onto your local enterprise board and ask them if they have any clients or companies that they either know of or are working with who, who are importing from China.
I certainly know South Cork Enterprise Board www.sceb.ie have a seminar about importing from China and have someone who comes in and talks about the things they had to look out for, so I would drop a line to them. I think you just need to sit down and have a coffee with someone who has done this before and pick their brains and see what kind of things they had to overcome.
    Cheers.
