The official maths book we used for first and second year maths was Calculus: A complete course by Robert.A Adams.
A picture of the book can be viewed here:
    http://wps.aw.com/ca_aw_adams_calculus_6/
There was no official book for Algebra we just learned from lecture notes and examples but there are plenty of text books on Algebra in the NUIG library.

    Marks for effort! :pac:

Three hours a week for maths in my day (sounding old): two calculus, one algebra. the-island-man is on the ball. That text book was recommended but you don't actually need to buy it. It's quite detailed as well though you may find it useful in second year (fundamentals of maths physics).

Decent notes for algebra here. Most of this material is covered in first year. You'll have problem sheets to do every week or two (online, usually). Have a look here.

In a nutshell: matrices, differentiation and integration.

Same here two hours Calculus & one Algebra and he's right I rarely opened that book either! What did it for me was class notes and more importantly going to tutorials every week.
And for Algebra there are plenty of good books in the library!
The only reference i can give you without digging out first year notes because its seems so long ago is to point you to a wikipedia page on getting the determinant of a matrix here:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Determinant
You might think its easy and it is once you get into it but it is more than just getting the determinant of a 2*2 matrix like you would have done in Leaving cert maths!

The only other piece of info i can give you is a link to lectures done on Algebra by an M.I.T lecturer. I don't even know if you do this stuff as i believe the maths course for I.T's in second year is different to the course taken by Electronic & Computer Engineering students and other Engineers.
If yee do take it then these videos are worth their weight in gold!
    Anyway here it is:
    http://video.google.com/videosearch?q=M.I.T+algebra+nullspace&emb=0&aq=f#

All i can say as without watching them videos before my second year christmas maths exam i would not have done half as well as i did! The hardest maths exam i've ever had to take, the summer maths exam in second year was piss easy compared to it in my opinion!

    Nom noms. Yayz! :p

You'll have lectures in a few different faculties but the IT ones are very approachable from what I've experienced. Your IT lectures will have fewer people in them and you'll probably be on a first-name basis with your lecturers after a while. This is not the case for maths, physics or the other, larger-sized groups in other faculties where you're in a lecture hall of 200+ people.

You don't have to have a laptop. There are open access labs all over campus that any registered student can use but there are also special IT labs in the IT building for people taking IT modules (so not just IT students and people tend to share their account details ). Sometimes it can be a struggle to get a machine so it's no harm to have a laptop, especially for the rare presentation and other group work for some modules.

    :confused:btw, what's a noob:D???

1.someone who is new to a game, or website, online game, or something.

2.A noob or n00b is someone that lacks intellegance or common sense, most people think that noob is a word used only in the online gaming world, but in reality it is becoming an ever popular word with teenage society.

3.noob is derived from the word 'new'
it implies that you are inexperienced
sometimes it is used as slang for 'you suck'

hahahaha....ignore the second one and the last line of third one...:P..
wat i meant was ur nt a geek ;)...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 431 ✭✭aido179

well if the hours for last year are anything to go by...it wont be too bad at all.

I'll be starting IT this year too! cmon!

    reap-a-rat wrote:
how did you find the IT course boomstick?? were you a computer whizz before ya started anyway??

Well I liked computers, but mainly games and the hardware side of things I'd rather be lapping CPU's and tweaking bios settings than writing programs!

Some of the lads in the course were really into it (there was maybe 17 or so in 1st year) but the majority were just like you.

Like I said before the main component of this course will be programming (you'll do C in first year and Java from 2nd year on) which will be completely new to probably 80% of the year so you should have no problems, the lab tutors are very helpful and approachable so if you have any difficulties talk to them.
I was talking to the head of the course (Des Chambers) reasontly and he's dead on and down to earth.

One thing I will say and I'm sure you're all sick to death of hearing it is try to make as many lectures as you can and definitely go to all your labs.

This is a course where you will certainly have great job prospects (lets be honest that's what we want at the end of it) but it's proportional to the work you put in, I could have studied my ass off for the repeats and made it through but I'd be going to interviews etc. this year, and honestly, I wouldn't hire me. I'd hire the guy that can show me some of the extra code he's written or has gone beyond the call of duty and done something on his own. Not the guy that barely scraped it.

So this year I'm gonna put some effort into it and try to do one or two bits on the side if I can and hopefully target a specific area to work on.

Ye'll have ~25 hours a week give or take.

There was 1 girl in 1st year when I started, she dropped out early on. I'm hoping some stuck it out last year.

You'll be spoilt for choice reap-a-rat :pac:

I'm assuming you went to Calasanctius Aido?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 431 ✭✭aido179

haha. yeah...unfortunately. were you blessed with the experience? IT was the one course i wanted to do so i hope i enjoy it.

Yay, a fellow former inmate of Calasanctius! :p B00mstick has summed it up very accurately.

Keep an eye on this page. The timetables are often up there before the start of the semester. Don't panic though -- there's an option and you'll only be doing 3/4 hours for that option alone.

Its not always the case that lab tutors are helpful sometimes you can only depend on yourself! I've had three years of I.T programming labs at this stage and for two out of the three years the lab tutors were very helpful and sound but one of the years was a nightmare. We got a foreign post grad supervising our labs and they were brutal it was no fault of their own. The person did not have fluent english and should never have been put in charge of the programming lab!
I agree about Des chambers sound guy and good teacher. You'll notice some lectures when talking about programming ramble on and don't really know how to teach programming but this guy is very good at explaining it.

I'll be joining ye in IT this year too. I'm liking the sound of this maths stuff. Calculus and algebra were my best parts in the Leaving Cert (OL).

cyberbemon : why does my nick give away my real name! goodbye shroud of mystery! lol. well the plan was limerick for architecture or multimedia and computer game design...but the cost was a bit too much (accomodation was a killer compared to what i save staying in galway)
can i ask who you are? (or pm if you want)

theCosmicFrog: can't wait to meet you guys in there! im sure you'll all be about for the orientation class...anybody in this thread should wear a hat...then i'll know who to shake hands with! lol

on another note i have a few questions:
Our modules, mathematics / mathematics (honours)...which is the one to go for? i presumed the latter was for higher maths LC...but i did higher until about three weeks before the exam so i put it down anyway... advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
I also couldn't figure out what student email they gave me...it said sheck the registration statement...but there was no email on it at all...im confused!

    It will be firstname.lastname2@nuigalway.ie

They gave me mine but they had tech problems and I wasnt able log-in!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,380 ✭✭✭TheCosmicFrog

Aidan (H4X!!!), let me know more about these hat shenigans and I'll flow with it!

As for maths, jaysus, I went for the regular "Mathematics". I do feel that they could have bothered their arses to go into a bit more detail than just an extra word (Honours). I loved the OL Maths course for the Leaving Cert though, so I'm hoping more of the same.

I too looked into Multimedia and CG Dev down in UL. Went to the open day and was less than impressed to be brutally honest. Then again, it was raining bloody Corribs that day!

My email address is a.hastings1[at]nuigalway.ie. I know someone who is j.bloggs4[at]nuigalway.ie. I think they just change the number for how many students they've had with that name.

Does anyone know how many of us are in it? I heard there was 7 one year :/

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,007 ✭✭✭reap-a-rat

haha...thats kind of freaky how there are so many boarders...not many people use boards.ie for nuig, but i guess...if there was a course to have us...this is the one!

hat shenanigans... ALL BOARDS.IE MEMBERS: at the orientation day, we have to go to a room (IT boardroom 443, top floor IT building). Please wear some sort of hat or cap inside out. then if we meet...you say: "good day sir/ma'am"

    sound good?

Everything there is fairly straightforward. Just go to whichever room it says (IT123, AM456 etc.) at whichever time. The only odd thing there is Maths. If you're MA160 [Mathematics] or MA190 [Mathematics (Honours)] go to whichever room it says on the timetable. They'll be in different lecture halls is all.

Ah jaysus, engineering on a Friday morning at 9am? We're fooked for Thursday night sessions so Eamonn :/
