Hunt or hide?

When the zombie outbreak begins in earnest will you hunt z's or hide from them?

This is a more global scenario, no jet planes flying over head to give you comfort... This is end of the world, us or them, intercontinental zombification (edit: zombification; this was in spell check, what a world we live in) of the human race. No rescue to end the nightmare, while one zombie survives the risk is still alive.

So you have gotten to safety, set up a good base, supplies and weapons sorted, you and a few mates. What do you do next? Stay outa reach and play chess for the rest of yer lives or sharpen your bayonets, tie an old rag around your forehead go get some zombie Mo Fo's (of course running the risk of getting infected and becoming a brain sucker yourself)

I would take it easy for the most part and only hunt if it was in pursuit of some greater goal i.e. cleaning out a building to search for supplies or rescuing some hot babes.

I don't see the point in taking unnecessary risks and in a post-apocalyptic zombie infested future, roving bands of humans will pose the greatest threat (see Dawn of the Dead).

Ireland will have a pretty unique zombie experience I'd say. I think it will be vital to go out and engage any zombies that are heading towards your fortified HQ. Letting them get to your HQ is only going to draw attention to your HQ and you can't allow for a large horde to gather outside your HQ as it makes escape difficult, and never ever overuse the word HQ.

I would think it's essential to limit your contact with zombies, just in case they you mistakenly give away the location of your hideout/base.

Honestly all I can say is **** hiding! Go out and hunt before they get stronger or even smarter.

Its not about hunting! its about SURVIVAL!

You only kill when you have to!!

because there are goblins in the tunnels?
    /lord of the rings :pac:

Im all for a mix of both. keep a good stronghold, but have hunting parties to cull their numbers.

I'd hide, unless they killed my dog. Then i'd hunt.

It's all about survival not hunting...Well at least we know who's gonna die first... :p

Well if the zombies eventually die out like in 28 weeks later.. its best to sit tight and wait. Dont want to risk the last remaining survivors.

Then again if they killed my dog.........

    DIE ZOMBIES!!!!!!!

yeah, has to be a combination of both, hide at first and put survival plan into action. Once HQ is set up, keep perimeter zed free.

I can't see myself hunting, but If I engage zeds on a savaging trip I would put them down. Hunting would probably be done in large settled groups that have the support and intel to hunt and cull numbers effectively.

It won't really be about survival, we'll adapt to a zombie world, they're not intelligent and it won't take long for the living to find they're weaknesses and begin to exploit it. I don't plan to just survive after the outbreak I plan to excel.

They weren't zombies, they where infected people.

Meh, I'm a reservist, and I have gun-toting freinds (well, aquaintances). Me go hunting.

    Hide.

Engage only if you have to and even then as quietly as possible.

When all these maniacs run off hunting for the craic, we will raid their storehouses when they die. In a stealthy fashion of course.

If there is anyone on here who hasnt read Max brooks then they are sorely missing out.

It should be required reading imho.

It's not the bible of Zombie Survival.
    (Rhyming unintended)

If it makes it easier to comprehend an outbreak, or to survive one, then by all means read it.

Do you have a suggestion on other texts which would serve in such a capacity?

i would go live in the mountains, the zombies cant survive in the mountains. That would make a good movie though, people hunting zombies to try and kill them all...

Hmm. Why couldnt they survive in the mountains?

If the graident was step enough then it might be problematic for them to get up to the mountain. However unless we are talking a sheer cliff face with which normal humans would need ropes to get up i still wouldnt feel safe.

However once on top of said mountain you have the issue of shelter, food & water and resupply.

I would do a bit of both aswell :D
No point in running around when you could sit tight and kill when needed :P

I'd wait a few days for them to starve like 28 Days, then I'd grab the biggest hurley or baseball bat I could find and hunt down the last few who were smart enough to figure out they could survive on the remains of everyone else. One quick swipe to the head of a bat or hurley and problem solved:D

this has been bothering me for a while now.
This is a more global scenario... This is end of the world, us or them, intercontinental zombification of the human race... while one zombie survives the risk is still alive.
    ...
So you have gotten to safety, set up a good base, supplies and weapons sorted, you and a few mates.

    1. so you're safe. you have a fortress.
    2. its gotten to the point where the everyday 'dum de dum, living in an enclosed space' has gotten to repetitive that you risk someone going postal.
    3. you have supplies and weapons.

this means that, despite it all, you really don't want to be the ones to risk rebuilding civilisation, even one town at a time? perhaps end the z crisis once and for all?

the army are dead. the government are dead. no one else is gonna do it.

    are you?

    let's fight.

its not really as simple as that. I think what we're going to have to do is malgamate both together to maintain survival. i.e. find asafe place to hide and then begin the hunt

true, but the question was posed in such a way that it is assumed that you have a safe place and are properly equipped.

so is the question: "find a safe place and stay hidden or find a safe place, and move outward from there"

obviously finding a hidey hole comes first.

Hey diddle, diddle I'm going straight up the middle. I may go down, but I'm going down hard; and i'm taking a boatload of devivified zombies with me.

I guess the question posed was an attempt to access the mind set of ppl. What would they feel after Z day, do you let them be so long as they dont bother you and live your life behind a big wall or up a tall tree or do you organise hunts, for sport, due to risk of attack, relieve boredom or to reclaim the planet for the human race. Interesting to see a pretty even split in the poll... I'd probably give it a go, grab an ol' .22 and find a nice grassy knol and work away...:D
