Low carb diet

I am planning on doing a low (ish) carb diet for a few weeks to lose some excess fat. Just wondering if people that do it find constipation a problem? I've read on here that fibre is not counted as a carbohydrate when calculating the number of grammes carb you are consuming. So is it possible to eat something really high fibre to "keep things moving" but still be on a low carb diet? And if so what would it be?
    Thanks

LOTS of green veg like brocolli, cabbage, sprouts etc (dont bother counting the carbs from green veg) - also psyllium husks will help (available in H & B and other health food shops)

Yep, psyllium husk once a day is enough for me, you can take it up to three times if you need to though.

Just eat lots of green veg. Rhubarb is excellent if you need something extra.

If your low carb diet is any good, you should find you are eating far more veg than you ever did before.

I'm someone who suffers dreadfully with ... erm... difficult movements when I low carb :o but drinking a LOT of water helps immensely, as in two or more times my normal amount.

Eileen how do you eat the rhubarb? I love it stewed but obviously that's made with lots of sugar so it won't do me much good

I stew or nuke it, depending on amount and add a little sweetener. If you put in ginger and/or vanilla and/or cinnamon, you don't need much sweetener.

Had this prob when i started low carbing despite all the veg and psyllium husks. However I found having a teaspoon of coconut oil a day helped hugely!!

+1 on the coconut oil, you can get organic virgin coconut oil in healthfood shops.

Also some people swear by 1000mg Magnesium daily.

Eileen G - What sweetener do you use?

Stevia when I can get it. I used to grow my own, throw a leaf in the blender when required.

Apart from that, pretty much anything except aspartame. Hate that stuff.

    Where do you get stevia?
Do canderel and all those contain aspartame? And if so which brands don't?
    Thanks

Ok so I have bought psyllium husks and a sweetener - xylitol.
    I have two questions -
Do people think xylitol is a "good" sweetener to use?
Do I just mix 1 teaspoon of husks with a mug of water and drink first thing in the morning?
    Thanks.

Xylitol is fine, unlike sugar it's actually good for your teeth. It does taste slightly minty however.

Bear in mind it's not calorie-free so take it in moderation.

Personally, I tend to use psyllium husks in baking or to thicken a pudding.

    Favourite high fiber recipe.

    1 egg
    1 T cocoa powder
2 T soy or other fine milled bran
    1 T psyllium husks
    1/2 tsp baking powder
    Sweetener to taste
    cinnamon and/or vanilla to flavour
    3 T cold water.

Mix everything to a creamy texture. Spoon into four muffin molds, bake in a Gas 6 oven (200C) for about 15 minutes.

Canderel is asparteme. There is one in a yellow box, I cant remember the name, but its light as a feather to pick up. Thats a good one. Check the label, if it says asparteme its bad.

Stevia is either grow your own, or buy mail order.

Sucrolose is sold as Splenda in yellow boxes. I'm so cheap I never buy it, I just take a couple of sachets when I get a cup of coffee anywhere, and them them home to cook with.

You find aspartame in a lot of diet stuff, particularly drinks.
