I am looking to join a golf club - Powerscourt, Glen of the Downs, Druids Glen or somewhere in the middle. I would appreciate it if anybody knew anything about the joining costs & subs and what is likely to happen in the new year. Everything seems to be in a state of flux. A friend of my joined Newlands in Nov last for 15k only to have the hello money cut to 7k in Feb.

Glen of the Downs have new Assoiciate Membership available from €1200 for 5 day and €1997 for 7 day. No entrance fee. Course plays well all year round with very good drainage. Greens were the best I have seen around this year. This is for the 2010 season.

    www.glenofthedowns.com all details there.

i think given the option i would prefare to give Druids heath €1500 for the year, much better course, find Gotd very boring myself but it would suit the higher or shorter driver as the heath is long, that is presuming the heath's offer is still on

Druids Glen have scrapped the €50k joining fee and now just charge a flat €4k a year. Powerscourt were doing 5 year memberships a while ago not sure what they're at now.

I'm in a similar situation myself, i can't see too many people paying joining fees for clubs over the next couple of years. I'd say annual membership will become more prevailent in most clubs after this years AGM's

I pass by GotD most days and would say it closes regularly enough compared to most courses. Par71 forgot to mention that that €1997 includes a €200 bar/food allowance. HB is right that Druid's Heath is a better course, but it can be overwhelming for all but the long hitters out there. I was thinking of moving there myself, but decided against it as I felt the course could be a monster anytime you don't have your A game.

agrre with the above re gotd,it can get very wet,
re:the heath,i think even for an average hitter it would improve your game a lot hitting rescue's into a lot of the greens instead of 9 i's,you do get a huge amount of run there in the summer so people sometimes look at the card and think ,,ohschit

I think the Heath plays 6000 yards off green markers, where most people play. Its not too bad to be honest, I am member there. There are plenty of holes where a drive of 220 or 230 yards will leave you with a 7-9 iron into green. Yeah some of the holes over 400 yards mean you need a longer club on your 2nd. Its a very very difficult course nevertheless, due to terrain, sloping fairways etc.... I take the view that if I tame the Heath so to speak, I could play on the majority of other courses around!!

agrred, what would be a winning score in your weekly singles comp,is there a proper strcture to the comps and do you have teams for inter club etc
Btw,are you one of the original members or a newbe?

To be honest, I don't play in comps, as I am relatively new to game but hope to start playing in them next year. I was given a handicap of 24 based on my three cards which was fair enough. My best score is 33 points playing with mates. I joined in June this year on 2nd round of offers.. I think anything in high thirties would give you a very good chance of winning a comp from what I hear. Bunkers tend to suffer alot, regularly out of play.

To be fair most bunkers suffer with the amount of rain we are having. There has been over 80mm of rain fall in the wicklow area in the last 4 weeks, most of that in the last two.

I live close enough to Druids Heath and have played it quite often. Apart from the 2nd and 3rd holes it does not offer that much as a course. The original lenght of the course was 7200 from the white tees, the course was shortened to accomodate the new membership drive and took a load of bunkers out of play. With no real clubhouse to offer its not much of a members club never will be.

I think the comment of Glen of the Downs being closed more than others is a bit unfair, as I have stated about 20 times already today I dont work there but a friend of mine does, I play it quite a lot, and many times played when others were closed. Yes it can be wet but so can everywhere after all this rain.

Blainroe is another course that stands up to the weather quite well, good drainage. And of course The European I think may be the driest of them all.

I think when you are looking at memberships in golf clubs you have to take many things into consideration, like weekly competitions, clubhouse events, members camaraderie so on so forth.

There are plenty of options out there at present but which is the right one for you!

Played there in an open and really enjoyed the course, if i lived near there i'd really think of joining if the price was right!

€500 for 9 months membership is cracking value, are they still doing that? Whats there joining fee?

on the back nine 11,12,13,14,15, all very good
worst hole on the course is the last, didn't know where to hit it and an overly sloping green.
