I am thinking about joining the army as an officer cadet. Just One thing, I am 21 and have a young child, as a cadet do you have to live in the curragh and for how long do? Or even if you do have to live there do you also have to stay there the weekends?

The cadetship is 15 months, you'll have to live in the Currage. Including most weekends.

I don't know what the situation is now but when I was there - albeit over a decade now...now I feel REALLY old! - you basically went in Sept and the first weekend you got off was at Christmas. Free time on weekends basically consisted of 3 hours to go into Newbridge on a Sat & you had most of Sunday off although to be honest that was usually the time you needed to get yourself ready for the week ahead and catch up on some badly needed sleep. Doesn't get a lot better after the first Christmas and you're basically looking at a weekend off every few months. I know at the time Cadets had to be unmarried, pretty much for this very reason as to be honest while you're a Cadet you don't have a life but like I said this was my experience quite a while ago and it's possible things have changed but I doubt it.

I thought the cadetship was now 21 months?

No, used to be 21 months, was reduced to 15 months a few years ago.
