Lay it out in this order:

    Personal details (Name, etc.)
Work history in descending order (Dates of employment, company, position, bullet points of accomplishments)
    Education in descending order
    Certifications/Publications

That's all I have on my CV and it has worked well for me.

Also, make sure you write a really good cover letter. It's as important (or possibly more important) than your CV.

What do you mean by cover letter?

It's the e-mail you send with your CV attached to it. It is your best chance to make your job application stand out from the crowd, and to sell yourself before they've even look at your CV.

It should explain why you are applying for that particular job, why you are suitable for the role, and a little bit about yourself.

Don't use a generic cover letter for every job.

Try the "contemporary resume" wizard in MS Word. I've been using that rough layout for a good few years now, and tend to get good feedback.
