Extending wiring in socket

I had to replace a cracked twin socket in the kitchen and all I can say is, the guy who wired it must have the longest, boniest hands in the country, if not the world. After pulling on one of the cables I managed to get about quarter if an inch which allowed me, with difficulty, to make the connection.
My question is, in case I have to do this again. Is there an easy/safe way to extend the wiring in a socket?

    Really, no!!

Its generally not the done thing, a new cable should pull along the existing conduit easy enough,

but IF connectors are used make sure they're 15a rated anyway, I seen a near fire few weeks ago where 3a connectors were used to extend a dishwasher lead
