Sounds like you need a new ignition switch, you might just need a new cylinder or you might need the entire lock. I've no idea on cost.

Have you tried a spare key?

Others might find make and model of car useful to know.

    Does the engine start?

Maybe i'm misreading this, but the key's not supposed to stay in the start position. Once the engine has started and the key is released then it should spring back to the ignition on position.

Sound like a mechanism is gone in the barrel, replacement barrel

and key is your best bet. Ebay one or ring around a few scrapyards.

When the key flicks back does the engine stop? Does it go back to the position where you can take it out, or just to 'ign'?
